1950's style buildings
« on: March 03, 2010, 05:43:28 PM »
Are there any tutorials or helpful sites on how to do these kinds of buildings? I need them for my Fallout terrain, but I am having no luck finding them, nor can I find any premade.

What kind of buildings? In the 1950s, most of the city buildings look how they did in the 30s and 40s.

In the suburbs, you would get many "ranch-style" houses.

Plasticville is always a good bet for the 50's. The 50's are defined in pop culture by the dominance of the caer which gave rise to the popularity of suburbs and drive-ins, so focus on those.

The 50's is also polpular with model railroaders, check out Kalmbach's Modelling the 50's for ideas.

Things I can make look nuked for Fallout - I can scratchbuild some, but I am not that good at it yet. Too much time doing aeronefs, not enough time making buildings.

I hadn't thought about Plasticville - it matches up okay to 28mm, doesn't it?

It matches very well. I use a lot of Plasticville stuff with my 28s. And I'll be buying more since finding damaged ones on ebay can be fruitful.

Yes. And make sure they say O scale. Plasticville did make some HO scale.

There is also Plasticville S scale stuff, which I think fits better than O scale, although for some buildings it matters less. Also, given the relative hiatus on civilian building during WW2, much of the early 50s is simply left over from the 20s/30s. By the later 50s the massive suburban developments to house returning war vets in the US/Canada were appearing.
