Priming Forge World Resin buildings?
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:29:05 AM »
I have duuring the last year or so aquired a few of these buildings (thanks Blood, Dewie). Lovely pieces. I must say, and will certainly prettify moste gaing boards, I am sure. I wonder how people have primed them? The Forge World webpage is rather cursory on the topic. Which kind  of primer will answer? Do you prefer grey, black, white or brown? Why?

Black. I want a darker background and deeper shadows. It is always black if I'm going to prime(apart from cars). Though I can imagine to prime buildings with suitable darker brown just to spare some work and get a building ready for weathering.

The Forge World website does have a brief "how to work with resin" guide which can be found here http://forgeworld.co.uk/resinmodels.htm

I wrote it about 5 years or so ago now but it's still valid  :D

The relevant point to this is the last bit;

Quote
I'd suggest priming your model with something like a spray Car Body Primer (available from most motor stores). Some model primers don't have the required solvent strength to adhere to resin properly.

I didn't go into detail beyond that as different countries have different products. Personally I use Halfords Acrylic Primer which is designed for use on cars. I either use black or grey depending on what kind of finish I want although I do occasionally use a rusty red/brown colour too.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Yep. For my coaching in, I used a matt black car paint spray from Halfords (the UK's biggest car accessory store chain). I'm sure you have something similar in Sweden. It's also what I use for undercoating figures and everything else (they do black, white, grey and oxide-red). It's a great flat matt formulation, covers well, comes in big tall cans, and is about half the price of hobby and craft spraypaints  :)

Yeah, I'd go with car body primer aswell.

Slightly of topic, the white that Halfords do isn't that colour intensive, does anyone know whereabouts in the UK one can get decent white spray primer that doesn't need several coats.

Why? Surely you are better off with a spray which comes out thin rather than thick out of the can.

Jesus, Richard! Make me balk at the prospect of painting that thing, why don't you?! I am glad I decided to start with something smaller.

Wow...  :o

Can't wait to see your efforts, Hammers! (Especially if it's the little hut in your other thread).

The amount of pigment in the paint isn't what it should be so coverage is very poor, and several coats later there is still the original colour showing through.

The Inn is lovely, Always wanted one for my Mordhiem table.
It's a shame they don't make them anymore.
