Plaka Reds for Mexican uniforms c.1840's Any tips?
« on: 10 March 2010, 11:45:44 PM »
I'm  going to be painting up some Mexican American War figures; Mexican Line Infantry and Artillery crew.  Looking at trying Pelikan Plaka's Reds for two different shades: Deep Red, and Crimson. These are two very common trim colours on the Mexican uniforms for turnbacks, piping and all that, and I want consistency, so the less mixing the better. What are the best plaka red shades for these two colours?  From what I've seen these are supposed to be different - Deep Red being a rich dark red and Crimson slightly brighter (?) I think.

Any ideas?

When I painted up a mass of 40mm Mexicans for an Alamo demo game I used Vallejo flat red and escarlata. Both were over a foundation of burnt cadmium red and cavalry brown.

Are you working on the new Mexicans from Boot Hill by chance?

Thank You Aaron; I have all those as well. Will work something out. I suppose in Mexico the reds would be quite faded anyway (?). It doesn't seem like they issued wool uniforms that often anyway so they might look old and a bit scruffy. No 1st corps but I can't wait to see what Boot Hill does with the Mexican army figs. That Col. is inspirational!
