Un-plastered Adobe color
« on: March 20, 2010, 08:53:20 PM »
I have several adobe houses/structures  :-*  that have the adobe brick intentionally showing where the plastered surface has flaked off.   ::)

I have Googled adobe bricks  :D and seen plenty  :o of adobe  brick natural colors plus the ones I saw growing up.

What I am curious about is what colors you have used. ;)

Gracias,

Glenn

Usually a reddy brown or very occasionally a field stone colour (warmish grey)

Depends on the local soil. There are examples of uncovered 17th C adobe bricks in Salvador, Bahia that are a delightfully dark mustard colour. I've painted mine accordingly. These ones tend to be a flatter version of the popularly depicted version. There's a nice tutorial on the Immortal Miniatures website showing Mesopotamian adobe buildings for other colour choices. Interestingly the author notes that bitumen was used as a waterproofing agent so black adobe are a possible option.

My pet bug bear is pantiling that's a uniform brick red. In reality older roofs tend to a much more varigated look, biscuit, salmon pink, ochre, buff as well as various terracotta shades, then of course there's the effct of mould. Again except for very modern buildings the versions one encounters in Much of Brazil are anything but red.

Sorry for the late response..

I usually paint mine the same as my base colour on the basis that they are made from the same soil.

I would perhaps give the bricks a darker wash and then a lighter drybrush to bring them up a bit too.

That makes sense. As I'm now apparently under obligation to make a Presidio, I'm going to collect all these handy tips  ;)

Why Gluteus Old Boy, I was only reminding you of some comments you made several months ago about looking for reference material to build your own Presidio, or had you forgotten those words. ;) ??? lol

Damn this 250 megabyte memory  :'(  Must get an upgrade   lol

There is a handy article on building an Irish Viking-era church, which has a quick and easy method of doing brickwork using a dremel on polyfiller covered walls. Definitely something I'd like to do, as it could also be used as a Darkest Africa Arab or Pirate stronghold.

Multi-functional terrain is always worth having  ;)

I'd agree with multi functional terrain, but you've confused me with the Irish-Arab-Pirate link.

Am I just being dim ?

lol  No, no, no - that's my fault I'm afraid. Sorry. What I meant to say was I'd use the brick-scribing idea on the Californian Presidio I'm going to have to do to shut Malamute up  ;)

The presidio would be useable for Africa or pirates.

Mind you, having a 9thC Irish church in Africa would be interesting  ;D

First it was North America, now it's Africa. Those coracle paddling monks were well travelled.
