Derby was reborn in the early 2000's and has been growing more and more each year. Most people in the U.S. probably have a derby team within a few hours of them if not in their own city. Not sure where in Iowa you live SV (http://www.midiowarollers.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/crrollergirls). This isn't the staged stuff that was done in the 60's and 70's. It is a full contact sport. Yes, we compete against other teams.

I am the jammer in front (the one with the black star on my helmet).

ok, I'll attempt to get this back on topic :)

Audrey, what's the reason for using proper roller skates rather than inlines?

I am sure partially because quads are what was used when roller derby first started. You can achieve faster speeds on inlines, but you are far more stable to give and receive hits when skating on quads because of the wider wheel base.

@Audrey....

Thanks! I remember when it was 'reborn' back around 2000...There was a TV show and such.

But, a guy I worked with, his daughter was 'big' into it.  I remember him passing out autographed pics of his daughter.  I just googled her, and it looks like she is still big into it.

Stacy 'Bombshell' Blitsch....

I guess I didn't realize it kept going, and proceeded to grow.  I just figured it was a flash in the pan 'retro' thing.

I'll check out the Iowa stuff.  Thanks very much!

Thanks for the pics too!  It looks like a ton of fun!
