Banners in GASLIGHT???
« on: March 23, 2010, 10:50:08 PM »
I saw many pics of you games (I think GASLIGHT rules) with standart bearer figures. My questions is simple: am I right - there are no rules for standart bearers in gaslight? So How do you use these figs (I have some standart bearers to and want to know how to use them).

Is it OK If I will use 10 men unit where 1 figure will be NCO and I fugire - standart bearer, but  he will be used as ordinary infantryman (I just want 1 standart bearer in unit just for estetical reasons)?

Standard bearers are a nice way of identifying unit leaders if you don't want to use officer figures. Also they look nice :)

My first Idea was to use standart bearer as officer. But when I saw this pic where officer is standing near the 2 rank unit (like in Zulu Dawn movie), I changed my mind.

But I am also like standart bearer figure, like on this pic

Next problem is that most of 15mm figure manifanturers sells their infantry in pack of 8 figures (I use 15mm figures. I dont have big table for 28mm, plust I am on budget :)) That mean If I want 10 men unit I need use these to buy  8 infantrymans, but 1 pack of command figures (8 figs, with standart bearers, officers, drummers). If I use 1 officer to this8 men unit, there are will be 9 men unit. What about last figure. There are 2 options: but another bag for ONLY 1 trooper or use standart bearer figure as infantryman + it will be great to see a unit with flag and officer :)

Yes, the standard bearer is used as a standard infantry man. Adds a bit of variety and colour to the unit.

I do not have the ruleset but from the games I have played I am thinking you can apply the same for drummer/piper/musician figures.

Yup, use them as standard infantrymen.
Or use them as Sergeants rather than Officers. The rules say a unit usually has an officer and sergeant.

Add rules to them if you like, the rules have room for this... ;)

Colour sergeant. My inspiration was reading a Sharpe novel were they defended the Colours against the frenchies,... losing in the end.

From Wiki:

Historically, Colour Sergeants of British line regiments protected Ensigns, the most junior officers who were responsible for carrying their battalions' Colours (flag or insignia) to rally troops in battles. For this reason the Colour Sergeant rank was considered a prestigious one given normally to courageous Sergeants who had attained accomplishments in battles

There's no standard bearer in that pic, just a flag marking an objective.

This is my standard bearer:

The carriage of colours declined during the latter part of the 19th C, however they were still carried in most colonial conflicts, the loss of the 24th's at Islandwana for example. The do, however have some benefits on the wargames table, as outlined above by others mainly:

They identify Units
The identify Command
They look nice
They give the heroic British defenders something to march about with and defend to the end!

I have standards in almost all my armies. As has been said, I use them for appearance sake and just count them as a standard infantry man.
So many projects..... so little time.......

We let people make a 1 courage reroll per game if the unit has a banner.

We give a -1 die roll modifier for a flag (same as if a leader is present) for moral and test of manhood.  We also give this modifier to any unit that captures and enemy flag-very embarrassing for the unit losing its colours.

I like that idea.

I give all my Mahdist units a standard. It makes them easier to identify as they are virtually impossible to tell apart otherwise. As with the other LAFers, they fight exactly like ordinary warriors, but they tend to live longer  ;)

Similarly, it would be useful if you have lots of khaki-clad British infantry (or other units without specific facing colours etc). Sadly I have so few units, British colours aren't necessary so far  :(

I intend to give each of my Zanzibari Arab units a standard too, probably just red flags with arabic numerals, based on the green Egyptian battalion colours. I'm trying to come up with something for my Azande units, as there are only a few variations to be made with their dress and by the time I've finished them I'll have about 20 units.

I have a few larger flags as "proper" standards (and a large umbrella for my Azandes) which give morale bonus or act as an objective to capture for victory points etc.

Whatever, they do provide extra "colour" (to borrow Thorbjorn's terrible pun  ;) ) and make the game more attractive.
