Banana Wars Hostiles Needed
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:34:51 PM »
I am building a US Marine platoon using Pulp Figures for Central American and Caribbean island campaigns.  Which companies make figures that match the general size of Pulp Figures that would do for Haitians & Sandanistas (or Mexican Revolutionaries)?   I have tried mixing Old Glory with Brigade and Renegade for WWI and most of the Old Glory look to small-I don't want to make that mistake again so any ideas would be helpful

When I did the Banana wars I bought one of those big foundry Mexican deals.
Out of it I got lots of irregular style mexicans and some civilians.
There was also 8 figs with Kepis that were semiuniformed which were ideal as Nicaraguan gendarmes

Brigade Games do exactly what you're looking for - Haitian & Central American figures in their Caribbean Empires/Banana Wars range.

I have one pack of theirs, the merchant sailors with tommyguns, and they're a near-perfect match size-wise for Pulp Figures, Copplestone and other slightly larger 28mm ranges. I do want to do a small US Marine unit sometime, and I'm torn between the Pulp Figures & Brigade ranges. The PF stuff is nice, I own loads of their stuff, but Brigade is slightly less expensive and they appear to be nice figures too.

The only issue with the Brigade Marines is there are no squad packs - you get a group just with rifles, or a command pack, or a weapons pack. Mixed squad packs would be nice, but I've asked on Brigade's forums and Lon doesn't seem to be interested in doing a pack like that. For those of us who only need small forces, that's a bit of a nuisance.

I personally think the Afro-Carribeean renegades from Foundry are very nice and several of them would work as poorly armed opponents to your marines.

I've been to both Jamaica and the Virgin Island and I must say the hunk in the middle in white Speedos looks quite contemporary.

TAG has a few Africans with bolt action rifles and shotguns that can be modified.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Old Glory has a set of 28mm "Voodoo Warriors" that work very well as Caribbean knife/machete-wielding bandits. 15 figures in 4 poses and they paint up very nicely--I just finished painting the last of my set. They are a very slight bit shorter than Copplestone figures, but they are quite stocky and do mix in very nicely. You can use them to bulk out your forces.

The Old Glory range of Mexicans for the Pershing expedition is somewhat bigger in size than the OG WW1 range. I would also say that it is maybe the best sculpts in the whole OG range. I use them without hesitation together with the Brigade miniatures.

I think these are more 25mm so a bit on the small side.

For Sandinsitas you might want to look at the various Wild West ranges, there aresome useful items tucked away in several manufacturers' ranges.

I'd go for the Old Glory stuff. The Brigade Games range was quite a disappointment for me--the sculpting style is reminiscent of the Dixon, everyone has a baby-face-pumpkin-head technique, and the Montana hats on the marines just don't look right. I wish Copplestone would do a Banana Wars range someday...

On my forum you said: Something like one command fig, one BAR, three rifles?

Let me see what I can do. It is not impossible.
And sorry about being grumpy last year - I was neck deep into casting and just getting the hang of it after my brother stopped helping me so I was struggling a bit.
