Arab Bandits - Color Ideas
« on: May 30, 2007, 06:20:03 AM »
I just got my arab bandit types from Brigade Games and man these figures are great! I was trying to think of a color scheme that would get away from the typical shiek look of white. Any ideas? Perhaps GW Scorched Brown like the Jedi-Knight robes? Khaki perhaps?

Hopefully you guys can help me out with some color suggestions.

I'd use combinations of light browns/sand/khahis for the robes, with the usual touch of white and red for contrast...

I think, usually the undergarments would be a light (white/bone/sand) colour, while the outer robe could be almost anything, depending on how wealthy the wearer should look.

I recall seeing pictures of Touareg nomads clad in black.

Yes, and indigo blue, which is sort of their trade mark.

Funnily enough I encountered exactly the same conundrum recently - with Cairo civilians rather than bandits though.

I stumbled upon good colour references in Tintin! In particular "Land of Black Gold".

I mumbled about it on my blog here.

I stumbled on it quite by chance really. Tintin is an excellent reference for any Pulp gamer, being mostly written in the 30's and 40's after all! Herge's rendition of vehicles and aircraft was particularly faithful too.

Feh... I thought that using Tintin for colour references was my little trade secret...;-)

It is a rather cleaver and economical idea since
1) Herge was very thorough in his research for all his stories
2) he is and artis and has an eye for colour composition
3) many painters including myself prefer a a slighly schematic rather than a superrelaistic composition and cartoons are then an excelent reference.

Wow, that IS a good blog article. Never thought about TinTin as a reference before. A friend of mine from France got me into the books back in the 70's when we were kids. I forgot how great they were.

When thinking about colour schemes for Arabic figures it should be remembered that the clothing worn by desert nomads is very much tied to their environment. Day wear and underclothing is usually white and light tones to reflect the sun and keep cool. Status is reflected in the quality of material used and decorative borders etc. Outerwear, cloaks and tents are in darker fabrics designed to absorb and retain the heat through the colder nights. Headscarf colours are a good way of showing clan/tribal allegience

I agree with the previous said in the subject. Yes, undergarments white and outer garments whatever colour you can fancy, or better what the bearer could afford. Mind also that stripes (in various colour combinations) were also popular. So, you can see easily (Hollywood styled Arabs) in black, dark blue, various shades of brown even gold and red laced.

Just a warning avoid greens!

Tuareg have the distinctive blue clothing. Propably is indigo which is fading in various hues. So, Tuaregs can have every blue from dark to light blue in various combinations.

I have seen also a tv series with red tuaregs (with a female leader) dressed in deep red/purple robes, eventually called as red Tuaregs.

How about looking at some movie inspiration (Lawrence of Araby and The Mummy series come to mind)?

I did mine in a combination of browns and off-whites with black and dark red touches on all of them.
