Plastic Zed Horde... Where?
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:09:17 AM »
Stupid question time.

Who made those plastic zombies that have the "horde" deal? I thin k they made roman and celts too.

Any one know how they look next to other 28mm figs? Are they worth it?

For hordes of Zeds, I'd say they were worth it. If you only need 10 or 20, then I wouldn't. They are  bit ugly and most of the multipart bits only fit on one other model. i.e. some of the legs only match up to certain bodies.  ;)

They are also more like true 28mm than heroic 28mm

No they are poorly moulded, pooorly sculpted, soft and by the time you've filed and cleaned up the plastics really not worth the effort at all.

But if you are on budget, then I'm sure they are...

I'll have to say I'm in the 'not worth it' camp as well.  I found them a bit small compared to my 'other' minis.  The details are lacking, and I hated the multipart pieces, nothing seemed to fit together at all.

I used several of them for a diorama I did as a gift, and then gave the rest away.  Not a fan at all...

Yeah but if you end up spending three times the amount of time cleaning cheap figures then you're eating into another sort of budget there.

Horses for courses, but I can live without.

If you are on a budget for cheap plastic zeds then check out the Mantic games Ghouls.

They look look a little more like "infected" than "proper" dead guys (as in they dont have missing limbs or eyes hanging out etc).  Also they are very slightly on the small side but I like them.

I recently traded for a sprue of Wargames Factory zeds, just to see them with my own eyes.  They are disappointingly substandard as far as I am concerned.  A really wasted opportunity there I think  :'(

On the other hand I have recently been sticking Mantic Ghoul torsos to the WF zed legs to make rage/infected zeds.  The modern look of the WF legs combines well with the nicely sculpted Mantic figures.  It also means that the best parts of both figures get used (the WF torsos, heads and arms get left out to be exact).  I like that it modernises the Mantic figures a bit, so that they dont all look like they are wearing torn dressing gowns.

Mantic have plastic zombie figures in the pipeline too.  I am very much looking forward to seeing those.

That's what I'm doing with my Mantic ghoul sample sprue too - but there still seems to be a fair mount of work to do around the join with the WF legs.  The spare ghoul head has been swapped onto one of those Warlord plastic ECW firelockmen that came free with Wargames Illustrated.
Back from the dead, almost.

Considering the amount of work required to connect the WF torso to the WF legs it isnt that surprising really ;)  lol

On the other hand I have attached a Mantic torso to a pair of GW Catachan legs and he looks a bit screwy:  I will have to go back to that figure with some GS for sure.

I didnt find it terribly difficult to match WF and Mantic, just a bit of scraping and some hope-for-the-best liberal application of poly cement.  Like all tedious figure prep work however, it was time consuming.  Probably not significantly more time consuming that putting together a 100% WF zombie I think however and with a far superior end result IMO.

Assuming that you have the components from several kits available of course...

Hearing that Mantic is planning on some zeds....that's exciting!  I'm afraid, though, that they'll be 'fantasy' zombies, and not proper modern ones....

However, I'm still waiting for that free sprue of Mantic Ghouls!  Come on already!!!!

I bought a box of mantic ghouls recently to paint up for the Painters League and I must say it's a pretty good box for its price!
The ghouls can easily be converted with some minor cutting or simple greenstuffing to add variety, if you fancy that.

My first plan was to buy Wargames factory Z's first but my local gameshop informed me they were out of production.
Maybe you can inform yourself on these zombies and if so it's no longer much of a choice, is it!  ;)

My opinion, if your looking for a nice, cheap zombie horde Mantic is definitly a good option!
