What I LOVE in VSF that close formations, cavalry, rifles and breech loaders, early tanks and airplanes can coexist!

The reason a Gardnerer and Nordenfelt co-existed on the same battlefields as Maxims is that the guns were there and better then not having one.  Ok, so you have one of those new fangled Maxims and all I have is a Gatling.  I am not going to trash the Gatling and throw rocks.  No of course not.  I will try to capture the Maxim and use my Gatling gun for support.

I also seem to remember at Islandhlawana, ie. from the movie Zulu Dawn, the British Rifle fire did not kill enough Zulus.  The Zulus won!

For a very complete review of late 19th Century MG's (American Civil War to 1890's) check:
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/MG/I/img/MG-1-033-46.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/MG/I/MG-2.html&usg=__0qZscl-ltAAZeMQ-D_Ws9Sz7G-A=&h=1098&w=1311&sz=119&hl=en&start=52&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=FZmfWDRlwn192M:&tbnh=126&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnordenfelt%2Bgun%26start%3D40%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26ndsp%3D20%26tbs%3Disch:1

He has photos and descriptions of every major type of gun inventeed in the era.  His later chapter covers the Maxim and other more modern types that saw service in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.

I rmeber having read that at the start of WWI the germans mistook the british firing drill for Machinegun fire.

I think it is not about whether certain weapons are really available, but in what amount and with which tactics.
I can therefore imagine very well MG in VSF, as well as a steam-WWI with tanks etc.
And the colourful Uniforms - it is difficult to assume that from 1850 - 1910 the technology had a break from evolution. One might have to decide about the technological and tactical setting.

In RCW, there were MG (many), cavalry charges and also occasionally colourfull uniforms as well as tanks, AC and trains.
I don't see a problem to let this happen 20 years earlier, really.
