Weird Cold War 2010 (using chaos on cronos)
« on: April 29, 2010, 09:14:47 PM »
The other day Phoenikuz and me played a small 3-ladder campaing using the Chaos on Cronos ruleset, with a few minor adjustments such as added rules for running etc.

The setting were an alternative 2010, where the cold war was still going strong (although not so cold anymore  ;)), he supplied all miniatures, most of the terrain (the local club supllied the rest), and both the rules, alterations, fluff and the campaing setup, so this is very much his game!

I Just wanted to express my exitement about COC, which really blew me away! and also show you some pretty pictures  ;)

First mission: Eyes Wide Shut
As attacker (playing a recon sqaud of capitalist bastards going into enemy territory to pave way for a larger attack) I had to place at least one bomb on the radar station (big building in the middle), while keeping my men safe and the communist scum the opposit. All survivors were going to partake in the last scenario, so I had to be carefull!.

He placed his men first and I made ready and took the first turn

Notice the tower in the background. It kept a sovjet partisan safe from three turns of heavy shooting from at least two guys, the fella finally went down when he left the glorius structure  :D

I get a bomb placed at the radarstation, and then run for it (I sat a secret "turn seqeunce timer" on the bomb that Torben wasn't allowed to know  :))
So in a last attempt to spoil the capatilists' fun, the russian hero "Boris" played the true patriot and tried to go in and disarm the damn thing

Luckely, it seems the Sovjet disarming procedures did not cover american made merchendise...

All in all a big succes for the "NATO" soldiers. I completed my mission, took down a lot more men than I lost, and badly injured the Sovjet Hero, I did loose a few more men than wanted, but anyways, It was great fun!

The COC rules are very dynamic, engaging and cinematic, and while we did not pay much attention to the competetive side of the rules, I'm totally hooked on this system!

More to follow shortly...

Would you care to elaborate a bit on this?  I read through my copy recently and hope to try Chaos on Cronos out in a few weeks so your insight would be very interesting to me.

Looks like you guys had fun.

I've played some games with another setting in the GOAL-system universe (called Roadkill) and I too found it quite enjoyable.

I remember that I found it to be a bit inspired by the mechanism in Vampire the Masquerade (a roleplaying games system), which I've found to work well also,..

Eventually we departed from the system again and went on to try other games. But I think this is mainly due to us being system-shoppers at the time.. not that GOAL is bad.

Good to see you here as well on Powerfist! I've yet to try Chaos on Cronos, but read through the rules a few times now, looks to be a good game, and looking forwards to seeing what else you come with.

Let me just remind you that I have only played 3 games with it, and that we didn't pay much attention to how fair the rules are in competetive enviroments  ;)

But I Like it because it's so simple, while still maintaining what need to be there in a good mini game. The fackt that you roll against your opponent all the time, instead of just rolling against a miniatures statsline gives a very engaging result, and the very open movement rules etc. gives you alot of options. Because it's so engaging, simple and open, it is also very cinematic. You can have your men going out guns blazing from the corner of a building, jumping behind cover agian, and you just do it! where other games systems I play spend a hell of lot of rules trying to make moves like that possible, COC simply makes it so by letting you divide your movement betveen your actions  :D it's brilliant!

Second Mission: Ambush Alley
This time the americans (me agian) had to make a covert operation to spot enemy robosuits/walkers, thus getting green light from their HQ to make use of walker support themselves. The thing was that I would be horrible outnumbered the longer the game went on (the sovjets where moving down a road in colonne), and I had to survive long enough to allow the walkers to enter the battlefield. On the other hand, If I just allowed all the sovjets to walk by me as I was laying in cover in the roadside, they would all appear fresh and healthy in the end game!

Having watched too many movies starring Mel, Arnold and Sylvester, I was of course convinced that american soldiers could do anything, so I went in and tryid to hurt as many socialists as possible (happy workers day btw!!! ;))

The first part of the sovjet reinforcements looks down the empty road
... not knowing that the americans are waiting for them in the bushes

Midway on the road, the trap is suddenly sprung, and Serg. Mikaels troops falls down on the ground, as the americans open fire.

an american sniper joins in the fun too.
After a few turns, the russian walker suits arrive, and after two turns more, I get them spotted and run for the edge of the battlefield (just as the hand of God interferse with the diceroll  ;)). the bushes you can see to the left of the picture was the setting for a major firefight betveen the american recon soldiers, what was left of the first russian sqaud, and pretty much all the russian reinforcements, due to a better position in the cover, the americans once again brought down more than they lost  :D

more to follow when I have celebrated workers day with my freinds

Only one helluva' man could have a satchel charge go off in his hands and still go on to brag about it over some vodka in a nearby barn later that night :D.

Perhaps, but maybe it was the good Socialists that smelled out some Capitalist dogs out in the woods. ;). Looks like you're having a fun campaign. My own cold wars are still in a backlog somewhere.
