AH PKZ-2 Helicopter
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:18:21 PM »
Hi there,

I painted this up for the Scarab Miniatures games day.  It was intended as a spotter for the 2 Big Berthas we had (one being Aircavs nicely painted one seen already on this forum) though I think we forgot to take advantage of it most of the time  ;) .  I might look like a figment of my imagination but it did exist and flew, though only in trials.  Its a 1/48 Eduard kit from a series of kits they did called 'never flying ladies' I'm sure it sounds better in czech  ;). The 2 crew are Pulp figures .  Thanks to Aircav for the info on the winch and ground equipment.  All comments and questions welcome

cheers
Andy

That looks tremendous - "never flying lady" and figures alike!
Back from the dead, almost.

It's amazing - every time I think nothing about WW1 would surprise me anymore someone on this forum shows me otherwise!

Having seen this in the flesh, so to say, it really is an absolutely excellent model. Lovely work.  8)

Superb work.  I made one of these years ago for one of our early Back of Beyond outings, but never finished or painted it properly.  I've another kit in the cupboard and you've inspired me to have another go.  How did you achieve the excellent wooden rotor effect?

Thanks for the compliments guys,  the rotor effect was just painted on using the foundry 3 colour system, dusky flesh with the shade as a base and the other colours on top.  It was just painted on in rough lines to try and replicate the finish you get on wooden blades. I gave the whole thing a light chestnut in wash afterwords to try and blend it in a bit.  Hope this helps.

I wouldn't want to fall out of the bucket while the propellers were moving  :)
Very nice tho
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

apparently there were two proposals for escape, one proposal was to fit a parachute to the basket large enough to arrest the fall of the whole helicopter, the other was a cannon lauched parachute which launched the parachute (and presumably the crewman!) clear of the helicopter.

"Parachutes, what defeatist talk is this for the need of parachutes!  Imperial German pilots know no fear and need no such cowardly devices" (hence the short life span for many WWI pilots).
