With the Conan entry I used old figures out of my lead pile and stripped and repainted a couple of the figures we use for DnD. For LOTR I would need to buy models as I don't have anything suitable. I suppose the figures could then be used for DnD but they are very expensive for what you get. Not keen on the idea of a LOTR round but I suppose I would go for it if it was chosen as a bonus round.

A lot of D&D figures are based on LotR. You could probably come up with a suitable team from your D&D stuff.

I've read some very good ideas here !

These are the ones that I would like to see in a next edition of LPL
- Small scale team  -> anything from 10mm and smaller
- Nudes  -> no explanation needed  ;)
- Whoopsie round  -> accidents, car/airplane crashes, sinking ships, ... funny or gruesome
- Single miniature  -> 1 model no more
- Sport  -> paint a team or depict a moment in a match
- Spaceships  -> Either generic or from a tv show or movie

25-28mm Pulp / 40K / Babylon 5 : ACTA / Full Thrust / Boardgames / 28mm WWII / Mordheim

Even a larger LOTR category is too restrictive.  I would like the powers-that-be to choose categories that can be interpreted across genres.  Helen's earlier defending-the-flag category, for example, can be applied to almost any interest, genre, era, etc.  I do not like fantasy, and would hope that no bonus round would restrict me to fantasy.

I am in two minds there. On one hand I think the idea of using the LPL to wither down the lead pile is solid. On the other hand I think there should be a challenge in the LPL and the bonus rounds could be it. You must extend yourself to reach the very top. You always have the option to ignore the bonus and try to paint something really stunning out of the pile.

I am in two minds here as well.  There have been bonus rounds in the past that I definately wouldn't have painted under other circumstances, and for which I had to buy minis.  I certainly have no problem with that (although I prefer to buy minis that I've been wanting to buy).  Similarly, I accept that not every bonus round can be general enough to have universal appeal.  However, the problem with an overly-specific bonus round is that while some will love it, others will hate it, and hating a bonus round can be a real turn-off.  And while I don't participate in the LPL to win, nevertheless, when I'm not attracted to the bonus rounds, and can't figure out a way to twist them to make them attractive, some of the joy of participation is lost.

My very serious recommendation to whoever decides the bonus rounds is to put off the specific one/s until later in the event.  A buzz-killing bonus around at the opening of the event risks driving people away.

I've hated several of the bonus rounds in the LPLs so far (well, not hated, but I wouldn't have done them through choice, put it that way). But in every bonus round I've gone out and acquired the right kind of figures and painted them, because to my mind that's part of the game.

How far one is prepared to go to play the game to the full, is clearly down to each individual.

But like I said in the opening post, very specific subjects are almost certainly best avoided.

But many excellent suggestions so far, which should keep us going for a good few seasons  :)

Keep 'em coming.

When I suggested this topic I didn’t know it would generate so much answers… So far my favourite are;

  • General Movie or Literature themed
  • 18th Century
  • Civil Wars (any)
  • Horror/Gothic Horror
  • Artillery Crew
  • HQ Group
  • Civilian Bystanders

The last 3 where all suggested by Admiral Benbow. They are good suggestion as it could include anything from ancient to today’s and from Fantasy to Sci-fi.
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Here's a thought...how about "old metal"...setting up a theme with some of the stuff we've been meaning to build for the last few years to decades?  Theres still a lot of the old 25mm stuff floating around it might be fun to see if anyone can do it justice.

Now that is a good idea... Maybe figures at least 20 years old  ::)

I would hope you realize that is older than some of the painters.

Tough luck for the whippersnappers. We would need a hard and fast eligibility criterion such as production time or first release, otherwise some suspects might complain that bonus points were unjustly awarded. "Has been in my lead pile for so long" just invites discussion and trouble, IMHO.

Maybe a link or some such to prove the age of the model, with extra bonus points for those that do and a big  ;D for those that don't.

Quite like the idea of painting an older figure (I've got a couple of Ral Partha medievals somewhere  :) )

cheers
