...Looking to add to my fleet.  Any suggestions of what would be a good 'Heart of Darkness' motor vessel???

There's a chap selling various colonial boats on ebay. This one looks like it could fulfill your needs:

Got that one already GM!  Something a bit bigger with a paddle at the rear, just like the cover of Heart of Darkness.

Scratch built or model kit?

Scratch preferred just so it can have that 'look'

That's a very nice resin boat, but its a tad long and lacks scratch built details (railings, etc).  I'll try and find the picture I was referring to.

There you go.  This is from an old edition of 'Heart of Darkness'.  The pic doesnt show the stern which is not far back from the edge of this image, with a large paddle wheel.  There is also a large Force Publique flag hanging limply from the roof of the cabin.  A classic end of the line battered old congo steamer.  Perfect.

Reviresco do a very nice card model of a paddle steamer. Not as big as that resin one.

The man is a genius, a true genius, but I know he is busy on the Gross Goetzen at the moment.

Steve, the steamer's name was "Roi de Belges" and looked like this:

It seems the upper deck has been removed in this pic. I could only find very few pictures:

Perhaps some of the Africa specialists here could provide more photos of Congo steamers?

Admiral

Here's a slightly better angle on the boat, from an older edition of the novel (my wifes university edition!)

Had some Google research yesterday and found some good vintage photos and illustrations of Congo steamers. I'm pretty sure now what you're after, Steve:
