One more Prussian Unform question. Who are Prussian Garde Pionier ? !!!!!
I found these pics and they loom very close to line infantryman but with silver on helmet.

Pionier is a German word for sapper or engineer.

During the Seven Weeks War, they were also used as fortress assault troops, with mixed success, if memory serves me. I know that they appear in some of the battles of the German campaign.

one of the battle honours included in the battle honours above is for  "blasting the bridges at Argenteuil and  Le bourget in 1870"

I would guess that there wasn't much difference between field and assault engineers before WWI

In the British army (at least to begin with) pioneers, engineers, sappers and miners were all quite specific and different types of solider within the general category that we tend to call simply "engineers" these days.

There are I think three British units still styled as "Pioneers."
