15mm Peter Pig for NorthWest Frontier?
« on: May 12, 2010, 10:21:32 PM »
Apologies for asking here without having done any indepth research myself but....

I want to do the NorthWest Frontier in 15mm and want to utilize the Peter Pig Sudan range for it. So....
for the Indians would it work to just cut the heads off the British and just replace them with the relevant turbans?

Is that heresy or an acceptable bodge?

The NorthWest Frontier, he means, is the area between India and Afghanistan, not North America.  ;)

I am really surprised that now you mention it there are not that many options for NWF in 15mm.

Nothing wrong with your plan in my eyes, I actually think it would work very well, only the work involved and the doubling of your costs as downsides.

I say go for it. And don't forget to post pics when they are done.

It is strange isn't it. I believe Minifigs do a range but finding pictures of them is a challenge.

Peter Pig actually sell extra heads so its not as wasteful as it could be. I guess I'll have a play about with a few figures and see how it goes.

I'd try LKMs Indian ranges for Pathans and Irregular tribes with smoothbore jezails/muskets, and Minifigs Pathans which are pretty much the only bespoke NWF figures now available. Essex may still do some but you might have to trawl through their Mughal Indian ranges for natives. Two Dragons used to do some Mughal Indians etc. I believe - now sold by Caliver. Also check out Irregular Miniatures. I'd check for all the units you want to field - both British Indian & Native before committing because available figures are limited last I looked.

These are a mix from my collection - Minifigs Mughals and LKM irregulars and a handful of Two Dragons Marathas

Predominantly LKM in the front skirmish line

We will be launching a 15mm Sikh Wars range at Salute which might help out for your tribesmen and Afghans.

I think a lot of people see NWF as a skirmish period - I'm doing it in 54mm!  :o

Lancashire Games do Sikhs, Ghurkas and Bengal Lancers in their Sudan range. I have some of them but I haven't painted them up yet. While not as good a fiure as Peter Pig I like them and they mix fine. Lancashire have a sale on too at the moment. I think I have some Minifigs too and could supply some photos if you need.

I have found that renesaunse Turkish Azabs work for Afgan tribes men pretty well too.

Odd there are not more 15 mm NWF in light of it being one of the original armies in Sword and the Flame rules, like the rules or not they certainly were instrumental in creating the colonials phenomena.

You'd think that given the potential in 15mm for some tremendous scenery and a sense of scale that it would be more popular for NWF gaming. I tried over 20 yrs ago and even built myself a Pathan village, but the best we could muster at the time were Peter Laing, Mike's Models and some Minifigs. The figures weren't inspiring and the Frontier Forces completely unrepresented. If Black Hat Miniatures are doing a 15mm Sikh Wars range that could go a long way to plugging the gaps - particularly if there are troops in poshteens etc.

I wish we could persuade Martin to extend the PITS range to cover some of the other colonial wars of the same period.

The Minifigs Indian cavalry and infantry are pretty good (but only a single pose per pack) and work well with PP figures. Some of the PP Sudan figures can double as Pathans and other North West Frontier tribesmen.

Even better, I understand that Blue Moon are planning a colonial range later this year, which will include NWF amongst others, so maybe the best strategy is to nag them to bring forward the release date.

Last I heard about Blue Moon NWF was this from TMP regarding an other topic, from Russ Dunaway on 4/3/13:
"In the Northwest frontier and Sudan ranges the figures that are being molded at the moment -- "
