Non-GW Warhammer figures
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:39:52 PM »
Hi

I know I've seen non-GW and even non-fantasy figs used for Warhammer etc but I can't remember the makers, can you help?

I was thinking Empire in particularly but also Bretonnian? Tilena and Ostlander (?, perhaps even Ksilev....

Empire: Gamezone, Foundry, Artizan, Pro Gloria, DSA/Armalion (Ral Partha)...
Bretonnian: Gamezone, Foundry, Black Tree, Crusader, Front Rank
Kislev: TAG, Foundry, Old Glory (yes, really)

Here are a few comparisons for Empire:

Infantry:

Women:

Mounted figures:

(I forgot to include a Foundry horse, but they are tiny and best replaced)

A couple Estalians for the morion lovers:

More Empire themed stuff. Back in the nineties, Empire armies had access to ogres, dwarves and halflings and GW made some models in the proper dress too. They are here, along with some alternatives:

The Foundry great orcs/ogres and their revenant elves come with an a asortment of extras that have an empire theme. The cherubs are particularly interesting:

Some alternative models for kislevites. I find that cossacks (irregular) and poles (more uniformed) work very well.

A few close-ups:

Some wizardly and priestly types:

Mounted figures:

I didn't have an assembled unbarded GW horse handy, so this one will have to do:

"renaissance" and "landsknechts" for empire
"HYW" (hundred year wars) for Bretonnians
"cossacks" and "polish" for kislevites

White Knight, are you sure you are not actually the Internet?

Oh, wait, I bought minis from you a couple times, so you must be real.

you could also make your empire with some arabic touches, search for the turks in TAG's website, those would make a great army centered in some sort of religious cult!
Cheers,

You could try Conquistadors for the Estalions.

I thought some Burgundian wars figures could stand in for Bretonnians too.

For Kislev you might also search for terms like Muscovite, Streltsi, or Boyar.
I seem to recall that Trent Miniatures have some Dwarven priests in Muscovite/Boyar dress (but can't remember why).
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

I bet you bought them over the Internet though.

Perhaps White Knoght is the front for a Star Trek style omniscient computer with replicators.

There is truth in that statement. Now I find myself wanting to ask bizarre questions just to see what he comes up with. Maybe we can kick him hard enough that he will update the Col. Marbles Masterworks, because it is getting woefully out of date, and then we could link to it to help people in these situations.

I am going to link to this post permanently now, though - handy resource.

Well, this is far from a complete listing of course, just some of the figures in my collection and that I think are close enough. For instance, you don't see any redoubt, essex or mirliton landsknechts as I am not fond of the sculpting style which looks dated (I'm none to sure about the old glory ones either).

Regarding Bretonnians, while some Burgundian wars figures might work, that era really is slightly late. The previous edition Bretonnians (before they "fantasied" them up some more with the current range) were spot on for Hundred Years War. You can also mix in some crusades ranges perhaps and the occasional Norman wouldn't look too out of place.

For conquistadores (Estalians in the GW world) there is Gamezone (see the one in the picture), Arsenal miniatures (if they ever get released, see swashbuckling forum), Old Glory (not too bad), Foundry, TAG, Eureka, Essex (really dated)...

The Warhammer World also has Araby (though only a handful of figures were ever made), so there you could fit in Turks, Crusade Muslims, Moors, arabian fantasy, ... (look for ranges about turks, crusades, el cid, ...) (like Artizan, Gripping Beast, Musketeer, TAG, BTD for historicals, and Reaper, Mega Minis, DSA/Armalion, BTD... for fantasy elements.
