Granny Grating?
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:12:15 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Forgive my ignorance I have been planning some 28mm sci fi scenery and during my research keep seeing "Granny Grating" being used. What is it and where do I get it from in the UK.

Thanks

Richard

Sounds more like some obscure extreme (death) metal band.

I do not know the term but are you after grid for walkway flooring etc.? From the name I would guess it is plastic aida that grannies use for cross-stitch sewing.

(this was the first site I clicked after a google search - I buy it from a local craft shop)

another good one is car repair mesh which is bendable metal.

Not having any easy access to "Granny Grating" in Australia, fly swatters are a nice (and cheap) alternative.

Wonder how small the gaps in swatters are down there. The ones up here are practically perfect for figures to stick their feet in, so to say. Granny grating, at least here in town, is worth peanuts. A buck gets you a nice and large sheet of the stuff.

I bet you'd get a few odd looks during a raid of the local shops for a dozen swatters, eh? lol

Never had the pleasure to work with this stuff though... :(

I buy the following 2 products here in the states fom a place called JoAnn Fabrics.  They are only a few dollars for packs of multiple sheets which last forever unless doing large terrain projects.

This one is more of a dimpled plastic useful for "tech" flooring

This one is good all around grid grating for terrain and or bases.

I don't know if you have this store in the UK but I'm sure craft shops that cater to embroidery and cross-stitch would have the same brands or similar.
This is my boomstick!
