New Release from Front Rank
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:02:35 PM »
Front Rank have release their first figures covering the Late 17th Century (1685 – 1700). They look like nice figures as usual…
http://www.frontrank.com/lev4_13_1_0_Late_17th_Century_1685_-_1700_Infantry.asp

They also release some mortars for the Napoleonic period…

Now, I can easily imagine a scenario where a small troop is send out to destroy a annoying artillery piece hidden inside a redoubt :D

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

Good, there's my Guards battalions for Tangier and Sedgemoor. Hopefully they won't look too far out of place with my Dixons and Copplestones. As Mark seems to have abondoned his range, Front Rank remain my best hope for cavalry too.

Look nice.

...Copplestones. As Mark seems to have abondoned his range...

Thought these were same period as Copplestone's "Glory of the Sun."  Whatever happened to that?

Yes, they look rather nice - I especially like some of the officer figures.
The only slight problem with Front Rank is that they tend to be very 'traditional' style in poses, aimed at big battalions I think. They're not really all that natural looking, although there are a couple of more dynamic figures amongst this lot. And they're definitely of the munchkin tendency - a bit squat, although a lot of people like them for that!
Ho hum... I think I'll get a few to see how they fit in with the Glory of The Sun figures.

It is indeed a real shame that Copplestone seems to have stopped sculpting altogether, including the GOTS range.  :(
No new figures from him for over a year now - and no GOTS cavalry  :'(
Someone said they thought he'd found himself a 'proper job'. Boo. Shame...  ;)

Those with sharp eyes will have noticed that Front Rank's webpage says that some of the poses come with cast on head variants, which was one of my main concerns. I'm happy with relative uniformity in posing, these are drilled soldiers not a rave crowd but I do want variation in head gear. The Copplestone GOS range has basically two poses, firing and 'at the ready'.

Most impressed with the range of Grenadier headwear options, hopefully they'll keep this up with the dragoons and horse.

Thanks Captain Blood. I love Front Rank and am perilously close to selling off my current anti-pirate force so I can replace them with these. If they match with Copplestone's beauties it inches me ever closer to the brink.

Not overlyl struck on them, dont get me wrong I like Front rank good solid figures and yuo know he will complete a comprehensive range but very similar to the Marlburian figures in style and pose as the good Captain says and after seeing the Copplestone ones they just dont turn me on

Okay, here are a couple of comparison shots.

I only ordered a dozen figures, but I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised.
They are a lot bigger and much more finely detailed than some of the other FR figures I've had in the past. In fact, they're slightly bigger even than the Copplestone figures... ( :o) Very cleanly cast too.

Main point to note - these chaps are a lot more 'uniformed' than the slightly freewheeling Copplestone take on the same period. Gone are the C17th baldrick style swordbelts and gone are the matchlock bandoliers. The FR versions are flintlock-armed and very definitely 1685 onwards I'd say - if not out-and-out 1700.

So although they are very nice figures, have lots of character, and size-wise are a pretty good fit, they really represent a slightly different era.

That said, the overall look, cut of the coats etc, is broadly compatible... You pays your money and takes your choice...  ;)

I shall certainly paint a few to see how they turn out.

I'm sure you can tell which are which...  :)
