28mm scale ant swarms
« on: May 29, 2010, 07:51:35 PM »
Anyone seen 'The Naked Jungle' with Charlton Heston and about 4 million killer ants?
I need to make some ant swarms that are to scale for 28mm figures.
Anyone ever seen any? Or thoughts on how to make them?

I have not seen the movie you speak of, but for "normal" sized ants you could do up plain large sized bases and some smaller ones with figures and stripped out terrain on them then fully cover with coarse grain sand or fine talus and paint the entire thing red/brown/black? at 28mm normal ants wouldn't look like much I'd think.

Leiningen versus the Ants could be a fun scenario too maybe.

That is the idea I had a few months ago. Never realized it though but it sounds good.

That story was one of the inspirations for The Naked Jungle.  We read it in school for English class, way back when.  Last century, anyway.  ::)  Always liked it.

Like what was suggested, use fine-grain sand painted to match the ants.

@ Photographer: what a horrible way to die. :(

Hmm, reminds me of the fantastic H.G.Wells story, The Empire of the Ants.

No doubt someone could make a wargame out of that...
I told you so. You damned fools.

An answer is cous-cous. Thank you Igniateff.
I have made 4 swarm bases up to now on 60mm round mdf bases.
One is a plain swarm, one a swarm eating a man, one a swarm pouring over a log and one a swarm stripping a small tree; thanks to everyone that chipped in.
Whilst cous-cous is well over scale it works visually as a boiling mass of creatures.
Very simple to do, happy to detail the process.

This post nearly made me spit tea over the monitor with laughter. Dangerous when you're using your girlfriend's computer.  lol
