Dune in 15mm - concept and ideas welcome
« on: June 01, 2010, 03:49:18 PM »
Hi,

I started collecting 15mm Scifi figures, because there is a huge range and some really great miniatures out there. My main project will be (like the great one, someone on this board did before) to bild a space station with 50+ civilians and play with the Bounty Hunter rules.

The second thought that came to me was, why not make a Dune skirmish/small scale battle game ? With the space of 2 tables you get a huge desert, building smaller sandworms is a task that can be done and would look quite impressive, vehicles and terrain is available etc.

Figure wise Ground Zero Games has some great miniatures. Old Crow has a nice thopter like flyer. Rebel minis provides the Fremen:

I will post more ideas later. Feel free to add what comes to your mind. Btw. I will not stick to closely to the book background (I read 5 of them and I love the first 3), but the games add a little more freedom.

Nice idea and the 15mm Fremen don't look to bad. (*I'm personally no fan of 15mm*) But Aurora the magazine for Heavy Gear had a tutorial about how to make Dunes. So maybe it helps.

If you're looking for mini inspiration, there was a thread somewhere about a custom WH40K Dune army. I forget where though - perhaps someone else here might recall?

This is an incredible work here. Allthought the troopers are more inspired by the film. I especially like the Guilde navigator and the troops with their tank. *I simply love hovertanks*  :P

Thats a nice "dune" tutorial ;)

I saw the Dune 40k army a while ago and I'm still impressed by it.

I'm stll thinking about some things I definetly need:

1. Does anyone know of a nice sandworm miniature that could be used or converted ?

2. I found a lot of nice vehicles, but no really good Thopter. Any ideas ?

3. Any ideas how to display House Ix and Tleilaxu ?

4. How could Navigators be displayed ?

Im going to use the game setting, which means the three houses will fight and try to collect the most spice.

The Purple Worms from D&D would make good proxies.  Occasionally you can find the revell models on ebay.  But they are usually pretty pricey

2. I found a lot of nice vehicles, but no really good Thopter. Any ideas ?

The Revell model Harkonnen Ornithopters were great.  I've got one.  You have to be patiet on ebay to snag one.   Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Revell-Dune-Ornithopter-Parts-Kit-/170493296965?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b2314145

3. Any ideas how to display House Ix and Tleilaxu ?

Ix could be done with pretty normal soldier models.  Just include the purple and gold livery and helix symbol.  You could make a cyborg for Prince Vernius from bits.  Tleilaxu are harder.

4. How could Navigators be displayed ?

Im going to use the game setting, which means the three houses will fight and try to collect the most spice.

This is my boomstick!

Again, thanks for the great link about the dunes, Oxiana. Rebel Minis also has some new marines that might make good sardukar, they look a bit sinister anyway:

I like these guys for Shadukar plus the rest of the line is good too. lots of ship crew members in the other packs and they fit ok with GZG a tad smaller. GZG has great figures for your space station game.

Surely you've read the books? Then again, they aren't too combat-oriented. Some cloned infantry and face dancers would be fun to use though.
Everything is better with lizardmen.

Thats the exact reason. They would act from the shadows, but that would be quite boring, so I will try to bring some small but powerful units to the field.  I'm not sure I would want to do the same thing with the Guild. A floating tank with a fighting navigator would be cool, but is just way off the background  :(
