Hi again,

I am still busy with the Back of beyond book...

Last addition, the Copplestone British Regulars (painted by my friend Tom Weiß):

I also added some more preview pictures of the book:

Another pic is on my website:

Very nice indeed.  :-* :-* :-* This book is looking like a great addition to Back of Beyond.  Good luck!

(p.s. hate to point out the same mistake as I made with my British regulars: the lee enfields dont have any gun barrel visible.  Is covered in a wooden casing).  There was a thread on this a while ago).

Lovely work. I really like Tom’s work 8)

I’ve noticed the painting error on the Enfield rifles too… a lot of people make that mistake ::)

It just looks cooler with a visible gun barrel...

I really like Tom Weiss's work.  Can anyone tell me the base color he used on those WWI Tropical British?  I'm trying to paint some up and I've tried Iraqi Sand, Khaki, German Camo Beige, GW's desert yellow - none look quite right.

Anyone have an idea?

Could you elaborate? It may well save daft folk like me from making the same mistake. Perhaps PM me so's not to disrupt the thread?

Note the upper portion of the barrel is encased in wood, which most people who haven't looked at one (or a picture of one) assume is not the case. Like so:

The upper wooden part is often painted as if it were metal. Easy mistake to make. Lots of LAFers have done it.

Didn't want to disrupt the thread, but if I PM you it kind of defeats the "so others don't make the same mistake" part of your request.

Part of the upper surface of a Mauser Gewehr 98 is wooden (a small section about halfway down), but not all of it. Really does help to find a picture of any gun one is going to paint. Usually you can find one in seconds on Google.  :)

At the risk of sounding pedantic, the photo above is of a WW2 era MkIV. The Copplestone chaps are carrying SMLE No 1 MkIII and there are some slight but noticeable differences, albeit not so much to the woodwork itself but to the fittings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SMLE_Mk_III.jpg

Note the  the different sights and the bayonet mounting, which is actually a small metal plate that runs back underneath the woodwork. And if you want to be really anal, most manufacturers, Copplestone included, make the barrel too long, where it extends beyond the foresight, it needs filing back a little. Eureka are about the only people who don't do this. My theory? Someone looked at a real MkIII which are plentiful in Australia, whereas MkIV are comparatively rare. Probably the reverse in the UK.

This page has a useful little collection of major bolt action types as a reference:

Good point. Of course you are right. But in my defence I was referring to the SMLE in general, rather than any particular model. As quick guide to where the wooden bits are on one (the sole point in posting it), the photo works fine. Not everyone who finds themselves painting a SMLE is going to be faced with a Mark III anyway.  :)

What would we all do without chaps like Plynkes and carlos, eh? I'm pretty sure Plynkes is making a note of everyone seen painting gunbarrels incorrectly, and then, one day; judgement!  ;)
