Hand made dice
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:42:49 PM »
I've just made a handmade D6, in the same style and format as an ancient Roman dice. Check it out at;
http://dampfpanzerwagon.blogspot.com/2010/06/handmade-dice.html

There is something very satisfying about making your own dice, as stated in the Blog - dice are possibly the most tactile part of the wargaming hobby.

Has anyone else tried to make their own dice?  Or am I very strange!

Not made any from scratch, but made some Blood Bowl dice before by redoing some existing dice.  I also have a little bag of wooden cubes from a craft store I may do something with someday.

Great work!

When I did an internship in a metal workshop back in 1997, I had the opportunity to produce a dice (or die? I cannot tell singular and plural apart for these) from a block of aluminum, using a lathe for the shape, rasps and sanding materials for smoothing the edges and then a power drill for the pips; very moderate, those, but the overall weight should balance it out in any case. The dice is 30x30mx30mm, and unfortunately, I've never actually used if for rolling for results, since most folks were worried about the 1D6 damage it would do to their tabletops. So it's mainly a turn counter.

Other than that, I've also done scatter dice from wooden blanks from the DIY store because I didn't want to pay the price GW demanded back then. And I've "modified" two sets of polyhedrals for use as Firepower Dice for Stargrunt II by painting explosions on the highest numerals.

Brilliant.  I have made some from baked clay.  When I first read the post I feared you had taken the ankle bone of a farm animal to make them in true ancient fashion.  Great work and very pleasing looking.
This is my boomstick!

Very nice, hopefully they are not loaded  :)
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

My brother made us some for a starship game I wrote.  Regular d6's, except that they are 6" cubes.
Excellent.  Sort of a game itself to roll them, but still excellent.

We have quite a few made from bone, and some from reindeer antler.

We found the antler slightly easier to work with.

I've always wanted to make a Roman d20 but have never been able to identify the symbols for all of the sides.

Erm... Roman numerals mate, it's quite straightforward:

1 to 20:

I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII XIII XIV XV XVI XVII XVIII XIX XX

This may help you too:

Although I'd be more concerned about (space wise) getting '18' on the die face myself! ;)
