Sci-fi urban terrain
« on: June 19, 2010, 02:23:58 PM »
Well after almost half a years thought and planning, I've started making my sci-fi urban terrain. I've got the boards done, they're now waiting paint:

The buildings are going to be very modern (regular shapes, large windows) inspired by some of the buildings around my local park here in Vejle:

So next step, is covering the boards with paint, then I can start on the buildings.

Looks like you're off to a good start. Those are cool inspirational buildings. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I always like to see sci-fi urban boards, so I'm joining the ranks of eager spectators.  :)

Thanks, well to Denmark's unconvincing win against Cameroon yesterday I managed to get the base layer on the boards and have started work on the first building. When there's something worth showing again I'll take piccies and sow it.

Well i've been a bit slow in getting wnything done, but I've now put a couple of layers of paint on the boards and half completed the first building. It just needs painting then windows and finishing touches to be added.

Very nice.  So I take it you can remove each layer and place minis inside.

Yeah each level is built so you can lift it off to get minis inside. It'd be much easier to build them without that feature, but I think it makes for a more interesting board. Jens (Zarfarelli) has built a beautiful board with modelled interiors and although his boards would be great without them, they just add that little extra that makes it a joy to play on. So in a effort to try to do the best possible I've decided to do the same.

Looking good!

Will the side wings have full glass fronts, or will they be open, like balconies? And will I be able to go on a rampage inside at Horisont?

Hi, the sides will be open balconies with glass fencing. And yes i hope to give you a little competition for a good sci-fi table at horizont! :p Not that I think I can compet quite to the level of the board you presented at GLAM.

Well my son hasn't been sleeping too well over the last month, so work on the board has slowed to a snails pace (sleep suddenly came much higher on my list of priorities than modelling). But I've managed to paint and colour the boards using artists acrylics with pastels to add tones and then a tipex mouse to mark the centre lines of the roads.

Whilst the building has been painted and I've started to add glazing made out of acetate (this is rather awkward to do and resulted in the only time I've ever stuck my fingers together after 19 years of regularly using superglue!), but the effect I think will be worth it.
