British Askari and Sikh needed
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:08:21 PM »
Anyone know of another company that makes British Askari and Sikh besided Foundry and Old Glory? The Foundry ones are nice but very expensive and I'm not too fond of the Old Glory ones.  Looking to add some troops to my growing British force. Thanks for the help.

If you are looking for equivalents to the Foundry DA Sikhs (the Brigade Sikhs and KAR are squarely in the WWI period by their equipment and dress), Perry Twins have Sikhs with Snider-Enfields in their Sudan range. They are armed and dressed almost exactly like the Foundry Darkest Africa ones, but the poses are more formal, marching and firing line rather than the skirmish look of the Foundry ones, plus a command set. They are of comparable size, too.

Don't know where else to send you for 1890s British Central/East African Askari other than Foundry, I'm afraid.

What about "Askari Miniatures"?  They must make Askaris?

Not British ones. Tirailleurs Sénégalais and 1930s Eritreans and Somalis in Italian service. Neither particularly resembles Central or East African Rifles.

Depends on the time frame. Castaway Arts have the nicest late 19th C Sikhs IMO but they are Snider armed and intended for the 1870s/1880s. Eureka have some rather awful 'Sikh Pioneers' with Martini Henry. As others have pointed out, Brigade and Copplestone are squarely in the Great War period. Foundry could probably cover the 1890s and the Edwardian period.

Sikhs with Sniders are okay for 1890s "Darkest" Africa (Nyasaland Indian Contingent and Central Africa Rifles). The CAR don't seem to have traded theirs in for Martini-Enfields until 1899.

The Pulp ones with 37 pattern webbing are rather late in the day if the intention is finding substitutions for the Foundry DA ones.

Edit: I don't know why, but I had somehow got the notion that the Foundry DA Sikhs had Sniders. Turns out they do not. My mistake.

Thanks for all the replies. The Copplestone and Pulp are a bit too late for what I have in mind. I'll check out Castaway. How do they compare to Foundry? Thanks again,

Justin

Just fine in my opinion.  Different rifles, but the size is fine.

The newer sculpts seem a shade taller/larger than the earlier ones to me but yes they will mix well with Foundry, somewhat better dimensions than Foundry actually. The later British Colonial range are very nice indeed, the Sikhs and cavalry particularly so.

I'd have to say go for the Perrys. Superb sculpts, easy to paint, very reasonable prices and excellent customer service.

Very hard to beat  :D
