Polystyrene cutter love
« on: June 27, 2010, 11:38:18 AM »
My wife got me a polystyrene cutter a while back and I had a play with it the other night making some scenery.
Wow.  If you haven't used one of these, they are great!  Total convert.

I made a heap of wargame scenery a while ago using a craft knife.  Forget that- I could have made it in an hour with this thing.

Wonderful.

Might have to invest - I want to do some mountain ranges to go along the table edges for the Orc's Drift scenario and polystyrene looks a good way to go...

The one I have looks sort of like a jigsaw.  'The blade' / wire gets very, very hot.

I think mine is from one of the defunct hobby paint companies.  I seem to recall tallish glass paint pots.  Armory perhaps?

I only have the GW one..............  :'(

Wife got mine from an art store- its a tube of card with a metal cap and a crooked thick wire saw.  Looks like the GW one but didnt break the bank.

Strangely, the GW one is far more expensive.

I've got an old breadknife with mucho insulation on the handle. Stick the blade over a gas hob for a short while and Bob's your uncle. Cheap and remarkably effective!

I haven't injured myself or burnt the house down yet, either  :D

A soldering iron works well, so long as you use it just after plugging it in- then let it cool.  Its too hot normally, but there is a window where its perfect for detailing rock.
