Fantasy Horror
« on: July 08, 2010, 03:25:07 AM »
So next year, Team Pygmy is planning a Lovecraft "inspired" event for our annual Pygmy game. I have begun selecting and painting miniatures toward that end. I would emphasize the inspired part as we are not looking for a Pygmy Cthulhu or Pygmy Horror game per se but looking more toward a very alien type of horror that is not quite garden variety.

So here are the first groups painted specifically for a fantasy horror game.

The first is an old GW witch (technically her base reads sorceress but she looks witchy to me) and 3 Ral Partha Boogie Men from 1984. I remember when these boogie men came out that I liked them but I wasn't sure what to do with the first set I painted. This second set is meant to just soak up darkness but have bio luminescent spots. I have used a gloss varnish here (which I rarely do) to make them a bit more alien.

The second set is a group of GW Night Goblins. I have had them sitting around for years and had no real inspiration or reason to paint them. When I went through the lead pile on my horror hunt they sort of jumped out. I wanted to paint them in a way that made them less "night goblin-like" though and so chose a really pale palette. I wanted almost a fairy tale goblin look as if they had once been people.

Well...there they are. Let me know what you think. Feel free to toss any ideas for interesting minis my way as well.

Yeah they do have a very Arthur Rackham colour-scheme going on.

As for more ideas, I don't really know.

Looks very nice. The goblins are really well painted, I like the colors.

As to new ideas, what about a group of monks/clerics turned evil (like cultists)? I'm thinking of very old GW monks from the 80s but of course anything in this direction works...

I love the boogie men. I keep getting tempted by these, think I'll have to give in...

I don't like that era of goblin sculpts at all, but I know they're very fun to paint (with their exaggerated features) and you have done an awesome job! Very cool skin tone! Looking forward to see much more! =D

Great stuff - like the boogy men in particular.

What about some horrific pygmy gods manifesting themselves, voodoo style zombies, possessed peasant mob or any of the weirder monsters from the fighting fantasy worls?

As for minis for them...  ???

Funny you mentioning minis to represent god-like horrors...you did didn't you? I bought this "action figure" this weekend because he seemed to fit the bill. He will get reworked a bit but looks the type to come out of Pygmy nightmares.

Here he is being menaced ineffectively by a squad of pygmy zombies.
