Grymn Military Commander
« on: July 16, 2010, 04:36:20 PM »
I started this one yesterday...he's Erik 'The Bear' Freyasson and is chief of military staff for the Grymn high council (the painted Grymn is there for scale):

His hands are a little large and his pose is a bit stiff but he had to be finished quickly so I'm fairly happy with the overall result :) .

"happy with the overall result"

And so you should be. Amazing how hands always come out large though isn't it, not that I think these look bad at all.

Neat piece.  Almost has a Harkonnen look, somehow.

Well, he wouldn't be called 'the Bear' if he weren't big!!  So the big hands work well.

Pretty damn amazing, if you ask me.  How often have you sculpted?

I sculpt quite often but mostly do conversions.  I've been at it for years but still don't sculpt enough to get to a professional level...I still need a lot of practice (hence the big hands/static pose).

There's some professional sculptors who don't sculpt at a professional level.....LOL

You certainly have the talent for it!

I'd buy one!  :D

I love the way you've done the cloth. Very realistic folds and creases. The beret is a great idea and it would be interesting to see more Grymn with them. Maybe Grymn SF types? If I thought I could get away with it (and not ruin any figures) I'd have a go at creating sticking some berets on my chaps.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you paint him, as he is definitely Grymn, but with some quite radically different clothing to the rest.

Thanks for the kind comments :) .

I have sculpted berets before:

but if you want a squad of berets, check out these:

Specifically, these storm-troopers:

Oh yes, the "Stormtrooper Kev" figure! He's on my HF "must-have" list - I just never connected the scupltor's name  ::)

The red-beret squad is exactly what I was thinking of.

They look great!

Don't, for god's sake, copy them  :o ...I had it pointed out to me that their berets were the wrong way around  lol.  If you want to make some of your own, make sure you put them on 'the right way'  ;).

Wrong for GB/USA etc, right for France/Spain etc, so just tell the nay-sayers it's the height of Grymn fashion  ;)

I'm in the RAF so I knew that they were the wrong way round (for the UK) but I thought I'd change direction just because I was happier sculpting them that way.

It always amuses me when people throw comments at me based solely on their 'current world view' when, generally speaking, I am working on Space Dwarfs...completely sci-fi and with no bearing on reality whatsoever  lol.

My reply comment was...they are mostly left handed so that is the way they wear their berets ;)...

Ever since films like the Wild Geese, I have liked the 'beret' look on my veteran troops...it immediately says...'we are too cool for helmets, we need brightly coloured berets to stick the v-sign up to the enemy!'

I think I may keep the theme going for some additional characters for the command echelons.
