Zombies with Character
« on: July 16, 2010, 11:34:43 PM »
I'm looking for zombies with character to create a "humanistic horde"... ones that imply actual stories about who they were, how they died, or perhaps peculiar eating habits (beyond ghoulishness - and the grosser the better!) or strange activities they are engaging in.  I hope you will help me find some interesting zombie figs - and not just the generic kinds that are so numerous out there.  Please try not to post any that someone else has already posted, unless it's your own paint or sculpt job that adds to an interpretation.

The zombie bride in Uncle Mike's pack really must have had a bad day:

Here are a few from Mega Miniatures:

Pretty much the entire line from Studio Miniatures:

Easily my favorite line from any company (although I also collect from many, many others...)

Love those, Laughing Penguin!  Especially the upper torso dude.  Nearly snorted coffee out my nose at the chicken man...  :D  Got to get me some of these...!  Is it my imagination, or is there a woman there who died in childbirth? :O :( :D  And what is the one that looks like a huge black monolith with limbs sticking out?  Anyone know?

I really like Zombie Ray from Hasslefree:
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=641

Hasslefree has a load of young people zombies:
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/range.php?range_id=42

As does Mississewa, which also has naked plague zombies as well as kids:
http://www.missminiatures.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=Zombies&cart_id=1279323349.974

Of theirs, though, I only really like the hippie.

Blue Moon has a few I might consider, but they've got so many and the photos are too small for me to make a good decision on the packs.  They seem to be very generic.  :(
http://www.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/index.php?page=2&cat_id=1

West Wind's zombies also seem quite generic:
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=360

...though I might be tempted if I saw more than a single figure of their Rock Fans pack:
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=495

... or if I was into the WWII Nazi zombies thing.
http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=zombie&osCsid=74bd5d3dce5efe570e7f53c71d99893a&x=7&y=6

Reaper's got some good Nazi zombies, too, but the only zombies I find that have character other than these are the zombie dog handler and the masked urban zombie in the triple pack:

50069: Zombie Dog Handler ($5.99) by Bob Olley
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/zombie/release/50069

50066: Urban Zombies (3) ($9.99) by Bob Olley
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/zombie/release/50066

I do like Reaper's "Called Zombies" which look like they are either coming out of or going into the ground, but they, like all the skeleton figs I find, all seem to have ancient fantasy-type weapons, which doesn't really work for a game like Call of Cthulhu.

Slap some green stuff on that middle zombie for an apron and get rid of his knife.
Bam!
Instant zombie butcher.

Don't forget Four A Miniatures. I bought their zombies to use in Strange Aeons. Great looks and they fit the 20s well 8)

Blue moon also has the WW2 world leaders set.  That's certainly full of character.   lol

Life is waaay too short to post a photo of every zombie with character....

 lol

One suggestion for you - don't ignore the base, you can add a lot of character through the items you place around the feet of the corpse.

Careful with these though, they are not 28mm (I think Bob said they are closer to 40mm when he initially made them for Olley's Armies).

White Knight, the one with the dog is excellent and the way you've painted the num and the priest has greatly improved two otherwise very dull looking figures.

Wow, Akula... I mean WOW.

Great suggestions, people!

I found this 28mm Carrie fig yesterday and thought, wow... that's a bad day - and she'd make a wonderful zombie... maybe she and her beau died on the way to the prom?  Sure, I could use just about any woman fig in a dress, but hey... she's got the corsage on her wrist, and that's a dead (:D) giveaway as to her activity at the time of her death.

Okay, you guys got my imagination going some.

Here’s one vinette I’ll be working on: The postman’s going to lose a leg and have his bag tattered, and the pit bull’s going to gain a broken chain, lose his lower jaw, and have a caved-in look to the side of his head...

Mega Miniatures DEAL-0484 Mail Man $1.43
http://freeboardgamesnow.com/mailman.aspx

DEAL-0231 Street Thugs Pit Bull $1.43
http://freeboardgamesnow.com/streetthugspitbull.aspx

I might end up using a zombie dog mini, in which case, I'll have to decay the postman to suit the decomp stage.

I might even make a similar diorama with a delivery man and a busted crate.

MEGA Miniatures DEAL-0472 Delivery Man #2 $1.43
http://freeboardgamesnow.com/deliveryman2.aspx

Here are some zombie dog candidates:
Mississinawa Zombie dogs can be bought separately here http://www.missminiatures.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=Zombie_dogs&cart_id=1279468651.166 for $2.00 ea.

I'm thinking get the pack, use one for the postman, and then use the rest for a feral pack to terrorize the neighbourhood.

When I find a good convict mini in a jumpsuit, I’ll give him a noose of bedsheet cloth strips.

Anyone got any ideas on how to "decay" a normal figure, human or animal with sculpt add-ons or paint (other than blood)?  I know matting hair is good.  Maybe there's a way to purposefully "pit" the metal with an acid, or perhaps a heated paper clip or blade to put holes and tears in cloth?  How about painting scorch marks or seared flesh?

Anyone know of a zombie fig that has impressions of tire treads sculpted onto it?  If not, how would you go about giving this 3-D effect?

Another idea I had was a "floater:" a really bloated human figure, partly nibbled by aquatic life.

It would be cool to find figs with obvious bite radii and/or sucker marks sculpted onto them.

Any suggestions?

Removing limbs is always a good indication, as is twisting one foot to an unnatural angle. repositioning heads at a slight angle is good too. For the rest, simulate some torn clothing by adding a thin skin of greenstuff and attack it with a needle or toothpick to add holes and/or tease it out.

For the tiremarks I'd add a thin skin of greenstuff to the place where you want the marks (probably the chest) and then get a diecast car with some interesting wheels and simply roll over the fresh green with the carwheel.
