VSF in Hell
« on: July 28, 2010, 04:40:44 AM »
I am thinking about doing a VSF in Hell game for an upcoming convention in a couple of months.  I am still new to VSF and is this too way off?

I will probably use the Dutch force I am still building as the expedition (military/scientific) force that either drills its way to hell or have some type a gate that transports them to hell.

What are some 25/28mm figures that could be used for forces of the Devil?  I would possibly like to even use some human.

How hot is hell?  How far from the earths surface would it be found and how many days to get there by drilling?

I am planning on making black terrain with orangish red lava flows and developing some type of buildings.  What would these building look like?

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Maybe you should look at Helldorado:

If there's a switch to get a different language than french, I haven't found it...

I'm not sure about the scale on these, though I suspect they're around 2-3" tall.  The last one though is on a 1" base so he's fairly standard 28mm.

I've not read a lot of posts there, but you might consider mining the Gothic Horror list, as well.

A search for 'hell' might just do the trick.  ;)

By the way, hell may be very hot or well chilled. I believe Dante suggested the latter, at least in parts. Been a LONG time since I read him.

Speaking of whom, there was a miniatures game, did rather poorly as I recall, called Inferno. If you can find some info from it, at least you can find one structure for the legions of hell.

I highly recommend Wayne Barlowe's vision:

I'd suggest more traditional visions of hell. Also, take a look at Victorian art...

Many Victorian artists were put in mental asylums because of their crazed visions.

Take a look at Dante's Inferno, the book, game, movie for ideas. You could always use ancient soldiers, like the roman legion  ;), as troops in hell. Just a thought  :)

I know these guys were not Victorian, but it may be worth looking at traditional Hellish imagery by Albrecht Durer, William Blake, Heironymous Bosch and Bruegel the elder.

Too much of our vision of hell nowadays comes from modernised concepts.

This idea sounds great!!

There is a ton of potential in Westwind's "Lucifer's War" range

If the Dutch need a little help, and who doesn't when fighting in Hell, there are some angels to lend a hand from on high  ;)

Hope that gives a little inspiration

For decoration I would think some of the spire like structures from GW's Tyranids, however paint them stony instead of organic.

Building along similar lines, stone but looking like they were grown.

Zuzzy's has a mat they call the Despoiled Reaches that I would use, too.

Barlowe's Hell fits right in with the likes of Bosch and Bacon IMO.

I also kinda feel that Hell, like alien technology, is "outside the system", stylistically speaking. In other words, it is what it is, regardless of where human culture & technology are, and so needn't be how Victorians would imagine at all. In fact one could argue the less Victorian the better, as that would make it all the more strange and unnerving from the characters' POV.

I guess it depends on whether you consider the genre a style, or a setting.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

In Virgil's Aeneid the titular hero walks down into the underworld through a volcanic region in Italy. Virgil describes Tarterus (Hell) as being made of metal and lit only by forge fires. Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell describes Heaven as a place of order and hell as a place of human energy and freedom, so maybe not what you're looking for.
