A Lead Adventurer needs to be convinced to start another project!  :o

We may have to revoke your membership card and take away your bathroom priveleges. :D

As for motivation, there is the mystery prize that I'm pondering.  :)

Okay so far here is what we have for guidlines for the contest:

1.) Steamer must be at least 12" and can be no more than 24" (60cm) in length.
2.) Participants must chronicle the steps in its construction.
3.) Hull and cabin must be scratch-built, though detail pieces can be purchased.
4.) The members of Lead Adventures will vote on a winner and I'll come up with some prize for it (though I will also build one so I may get to give a prize to myself).
5.) Primed only
6.) Deadline September 15th

Did I miss anything???

Sounds very tempting! Although I have no knowledge in this shipbuilding area whatsoever, I'll wiki tonight to find more info.

If there were tramp steamers in Darkest Africa you can practically count me in as well.

Well, let's just wait to hear if Overlord and/or TJ are in and anyone else today.

Some of us have to work for a living without spending all day surfing the net!

Count me in. The September 15th deadline is better for me too.

(With the amount of flooding locally, its probably only a matter of time until my front garden resembles a dockyard anyway! The 24" limitation means that I won't be able to use it to pop down to the local shops   )

All right, count me in as well. But I have a couple suggestions for the rules, please feel free to disregard them ;) I would like to make this a cooperative thing instead of a competition. From my experience, competition pulls groups apart and I like you guys way too much to face off against you in a competition

We could have a prize that is given out randomly, in which case all who participate will be eligible, and also forgo the voting all together :) If we work cooperatively we could build some nice stuff for sure! Either way, I will submit an entry, but ask not to have it eligible for voting. I will try to have mine done before September, as well as an article, so that people can use it and take inspiration from it, and perhaps build something better :)

Thanks to everyone for helping me decide to do this, I appreciate it :)

I may do this one! Not only are there great pics of it, there are great pics of the interior on the site as well! I mean, I will make mine more trampy, but still!

Neldoreth: The competition will of course be friendly. I'll be posting my step by step along the way so people can freely glom ideas from me. The competition part of it more like sport than cut-throat. We'll be able to egg each other on and such.

I find that having some ultimate goal, other than finishing, helps keep people on track. And with all the Lead Adventurers voting, we don't have to worry about the results being skewed (unless a German enters in which case you KNOW they'll all vote for him.   )

In the end, the whole goal is to show how to produce a great tramp steamer from scratch.

Doh! CM, MM I transpose those all the time. It's people like me that caused the whole Mars Beagle project to fly off course.

My Ideas
« Reply #27 on: July 25, 2007, 06:52:17 PM »
Okay,

I updated my blog, http://cursedtreasures.blogspot.com/ with the contest ideas.

I have choosen to do 1 of 3 steamers or at least use them for inspiration. Those are:

1. S.S. Venture from King kong (Peter Jackson)
2. Bantu Wind from Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Arc)
3. Steamer from The Mummy

I found pictures of the first two, but no luck on the mummy steamer, so if anyone can be of help that would be great.

I'm also thinking of doing the ship in either wood (3/8th" MDF & Plywood) or I have a ton of PVC flat plastic and styrene, have to see what I have enough of. I also plan on having a hold for large creatures & the upper decks be removable so I can use the interiors for games.

So there you have my ideas, now I wonder what i got myself into :o

Would this classify as a Tramp Steamer?

These pictures are taken from one of my favourite comics, called Franka.
