Great start on the sculpting.

What tools are you using to manipulate, shape and smooth the greenstuff?

Thanks very much chaps, it means a lot  :)

@ Oxiana - I'm using the ones in the photo below

With the one at the top being used the most.

Looking at it in daylight it is a bit rough in places. I think I might be using too much water when smoothing as it tends to distort what I'm looking at somewhat.

Try some rubber tipped clay shapers - I must admit I never thought they would work and dont be afraid to take a sharp blade to the set putty either. Worst case you add some putty and do that bit again

I thought spit was the liquid of choice!   :o

I'm not a sculpted by any standards, but recently I've been using fairy liquid instead of water. It seems to let the shaping tools slide over the putty giving a nice smooth finish.

I say, that's none too shabby young Bibbly.

Carry on like that, and Malamute Industries Inc might have some work for you.

You can do sombreros, right?  ;)

Being a pervayor of the filthy disgusting habit of using spit I find the bubbles detract a little. Not too keen on the taste either ;D

Spit works a treat lads  :D  :D

Here is the finished sculpt, all painted and based but without hands as I've tried about six different times and I was getting a bit narked  lol They will be done, but not just yet.

I'm really pleased with the way he turned out and will be doing more  :) Although I got carried away and painted the head before taking a 'green' photo of it  ::)

And here he is on board  :D

Apart from the hands I really enjoyed this. I didn't think I would because I'm not the most patient person going, but hey, there you go  :)

Comments and crits from chaps who do this professionally (and anyone else  :) ) would be most appreciated

cheers

James

Nice work James. This will fill in a gap in the available troops for Japanese forces. I currently use Pulp Jap naval troops but, unlike their Americans, they don't do any unarmed 'boat crew' types.

I'm shortly going to have to do greenstuff mods on several Old Glory Boxer Rebellion naval gun crew figures, in order to get sufficient members of the required nationality for my Martian Aeronef fleet  ;)

Hoorah! Great work. From a layman's point of view it looks fine to me. Mind you I looked at the first pic and thought "His neck's a bit long"  ::).

Patience with an colonial, but 'fairy liquid' is a way of referring generically to dishwashing liquid by specific brand name?
