Biting off more than I can probably chew
« on: August 27, 2010, 01:36:18 PM »
I was racking my brains last night trying to think of something that could fit on a CD and decided on a Roman calendar scenery piece, a la the one in HBO's Rome with the pegs. I'll be doing it in the form of a plinth, a little bit like the one in the picture below rather than a wall like on the program, so it will fit on to a CD base.

I think it might turn out to be a lot more challenging than I first thought looking at that picture. I'm not an experienced modeller/painter and there is an awful lot of writing on there but hopefully uploading WIPs etc on here will spur me on a bit. And if it looks crap, at least I pulled my finger out this contest.

That's the spirit!

A suggestion, if it does come out looking not as good as you hoped; it would probably look awesome as a ruined monumnet... so I think you can't really lose here, either you get a nice intact piece of terrain, or a nice ruined one!

Good luck with this, I'm intrigued as to how it'll turn out.

I'm thinking that using something along these lines might be an easier way of doing the letters:

They do them as small as 1/8" but I can only find them from an American store that has a minimum $20 order (they're $3.60). I'll keep looking for a UK source as I think if I stamp them into some sort of putty, then apply a wash during painting, they might do the trick.

Also, the calendar writing is looking a little less daunting after watching the opening credits of Rome and finding this version of the Roman calendar:
