River boat Plans
« on: July 19, 2007, 10:43:03 PM »
Guys,

I'm thinking of starting a new terrain project for my LotOW games. I had a brillant idea to build a Steam River boat and have the game hppen on it. Now this thing will be huge in 25mm, but does anyone happen to have any deck plans or good refrences for anything like this?

I'm looking at having a few staterooms as well as a place for a bar/casino for large fights.

Any help would be great...Thanks

Hi TJSKI,

If I remeber correctly there was a model featured in an old issue of Wargames Illustrated some years ago which was similar to what you have mentioned. I'm not sure if it included plans but was certainly impressive and would be usefull as reference or inspiration.

I'll have a look back through magazines and let you know which one it was in.

Kind Regards,

Barry

Yep, Barry is defiantely correct. There was an article in Wargames Illustrated. I will see if I can find it as well. From what I can remeber the model was very big and had access to all the rooms/cabins etc. It sounds like what you need.

Oh yes, the "Keystone" was awesome (even with all the "Alumilite" advertising in the article! ;)).

I´ve toyed with that idea as well. Let me advise you to aim at something 48" in length and 12", maximum 18" in width (rather less width, even though riverboats were rather wide, a length-width ratio of 3:1 looks ridiculous at this size of model). Always consider that you might want to transport it.

What a great idea  :D

I did a bit of a google and found this which might be a good place to find suitable plans; although they'd be full hull and might need to be re-sized to 28mm:

Or for something a little simpler (and free) there's this:

This isn't an Old West paddlesteamer and it's in 15mm but it's a useful article for scratchbuilding techniques and ideas:

TJSKI,

The article I mentioned is in Wargames Illustrated 156, September 2000.
Unfortunately I have a spare copy of 155 but not 156  :(

Kind Regards,

Barry

If you're still looking for plans:

http://modelplans.steamboats.org/    Not a lot of pictures, but maybe a good starting point.

As for interior layouts, I would look at pictures of old hotel lobbies and casinos.

My father built a model of the Delta Queen. It wasn't far off if size from 25mm. I can't seem to find the plans online however. Check eBay?

A few years ago at Historicon (I think it was 2005), someone had a huge steamboat model.  It was in three levels and came apart, being fully detailed inside.  They were using the Wooden Ships, Iron Men rules, I believe.  It was gorgeous!  Maybe you could find photos of it or even find out who made it.

I vaguely remember seeing pictures of the three decker, but cannot remember where.

Maybe you could get some extra visualisations from a DVD - possibly the "Maverick" film might be a good choice, otherwise there's always Keaton's Steamboat Bill jnr !
