Am thinking of sculpting 10 or 15mm scale scifi.
« on: August 28, 2010, 05:31:52 AM »
I am thinking of doing a range of sci-fi inspired figure sculpts for my RPG campaign, and
was thinking of switching down to a cheaper and more portable 15mm scale.

Is this a popular format?

I would go for 15mm

Based on the last years crazy number of release (look at DropShip Horizon for example) and you will see this scale has gone through the roof.

Not wishing to put you off but if your thinking of selling these you would have stiff competition from GZG, Khurasan etc but a range of figures for RPG (i.e. lots of characters) would be most welcome as a change from troops.

I would agree that there is a lot already out there for troops and such. RPG-based figs featuring civillians, gagns, and other groups of non-coms are what haven't been done. Also, there is room for somebody who is willing to offer up something new in the alien department.

Though there have been plenty of new aliens released, a good portion of the them still fall into the tried and true catagories of anthro animals, movie-inspired, or general rubber suit aliens. There have been few solid offerings of anything in aliens that is really all that different. I know that different is risky and sometimes difficult to mold/cast, but there is room there if someone where to want to take the chance.

I'd like to see your take on Sci-Fi Dave. Do you want to have a solid concept already?

These companies do great work, but I think there is definitely room for another set of minis- especially if your vision brings something different to the table.

Well,

We could do with something a little covenant themed (Halo), good proxy ODST and spartans from Critical Mass Games, but nothing really convincing to go against them in a Halo-esque themed game.

So a market definately! ;)

15mm is very popular and 15mm.co.uk are always looking for 15mm sci fi sculptors.  :)

Nail on the head- civs, aliens, pirates, starport thugs and adventurers is exactly what I needed for my campaign, and looking around, certainly whats short in selection.

Heh, I sculpted a figure last night and messed up my maths- she came in at 11mm to the eye.  The second came in at 16mm to her eye.  Its a totally different ball game!  May have to invest in one of those digital calipers.

I just ordered a bunch of figures from a few ranges, and will scale my sculpts to bets match those.

Anyone got any advice on choice of wire for armatures?  The wires I have access to are either too flimsy or two thick.  Double twisting fine wire does not provide enough support.

Man, you want to get your best figures out young, I can see this scale killing your eye sight  :)

Here is my first go at a 15mm figure.  I painted the green to see if the details where sufficient- I dont have any 15mm stuff here to compare.  15mm to the eye- mounted here on an Australian 5c coin.

That looks pretty good to me, as Svenn said great work on the face. Do you reckon it's easier to scuplt 15s or 28s? 15s have the advantage that things are smaller so extra fine detail just gets in the way, but also the disadvantage that they're exactly that small? just wondering what you reckon is easier to scuplt?

Well, having only done one so far, I would say 28mm is much easier, and a lot more fun.  There merest touch will change a whole expression, so I dont feel I have control in communicating what I want- probably the limitation of the scale.

Ill do a dozen more and let you know.

I support Convenants only if they get one those cool swords....

"cough" Not-Jedi "cough" with flowing robes and of course "lightswords" ;) Some alien Not-Jedi would ne nice, a Not-Wookie Jedi :D

But I don't want to drive you into IP problems ;)

Saber Rider would also be cool  :D All three of them in armour. In general some cool Scifi Marshalls or cowboys with high-tech armour and weapons would be nice.
