Dusty windscreen. How do I do it?

Dear LAFers,

some time ago a friend kindly gave me his 1:48 Tamiya Citroen staff car, as he completely gave up WWII gaming. Now, I am thinking of repainting it a wee bit in the near future. Sadly when my friend glued the windscreen onto the rest, it got all milky because of the superglue. My thought would be creating a dusty window effect on the outside in order to cover it up. My google fu was useless these last few days, so I would be thankful for any tutorial on how to achieve that effect. Or do you have any tips on how to do it? Any other ideas on how to cover it up? Paint the glass up completely?

Maybe a quick light shot of spray paint?  How much is milky?  It would be cool to tape off the areas where the wiper blades would hit.

if you can get to the milky areas you might be able to remove the "fog" using something like a match, the wooden bit that is

Thank you for the tips. Sadly I can't reach the inside of the glass since the car is already assembled. I'll try taping a part off where the wipers would be and then use some pastels. Hopefully it'll work.

Both drybrushing and pastels tend to be a bit patchy when applied to smooth surfaces. Airbrushing one or two thin layers of dust-coloured paint onto it (after masking of the wiper AoEs) is the most "realistic" option, IMHO, especially if you spray on the final layer from a distance to allow some particles to part-dry in mid-air.

My way:





Very watered reddish brown paint Vallejo (you can chose any desired dust colour of course) applied as a wash, left to dry and firmly rubbed off with a toothpick where the wipers would have washed it away...

That is excellent, Michi! I don't own an airbrush, so this is exactly right for me! I will give it a go... hopefully this weekend.

Might help to put a gloss varnish over the window before you do the dirt effect, if the window is not shiny enough now.
