Non-GW Space Marine Troops
« on: September 08, 2010, 05:39:21 PM »
Okay, my next project is to do a not-GW space marine type army for use with any of the rules that I use.

For standard powered armour wearing marines I will be using Vridian Interdict Marines http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_61&products_id=576

but with new heads, as I don`t like the viridian ones, from Pig Iron http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/hd7-heavy-infantry-closed-head-sprues-p-23.html

Scouts will be standard old metal GW ones, but with all skullz(TM) and extra bits removed and weapons swapped.

For Terminators I will be using lots of EM4 Space Rangers http://www.em4miniatures.com/acatalog/Science_Fiction.html (scroll down)

As for Dreadnoughts I will be using Mongoose MI "Grizzly" suits of which I have 3, and for vehicles I will be using de-skulled & de-eagled new Rhinos.

I have loads of painted and unpainted Marines but the whole "In the far future, everything will be covered in useless bling!" has really started to get up my nose >:( lol

I will be painting them in a variety of chapter colours and they will represent a Rogue Traders crusading retinue (same army badge).

Cheers SW

Our school club suggests marines painted in school house colours.

Maybe you could theme yours on local sports teams ?

Seeing as you want to go non-GW, why not try this beast for the Rhino?:

http://www.westwindproductions.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=126_128&products_id=1067

For scouts, you could use the jungle troopers from Copplestone Castings:

http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=FW

...I know you probably already have the GW minis that you plan to use...but I thought I'd suggest a non-GW alternative ;)

This sounds like a cool project. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the results. The main thing I have against GW Space Marines (other than the price) is the whole skulls and unecessary adornments.

Thanks for the advice one and all!

The idea is to have a marine force that I like the look of, so thats why I am keeping the original metal scouts and the new Rhino's plus the fact that i have all of the stuff for this project already :o

I will post pics when it gets a bit more advanced, I have already put together and painted some EM4 space rangers as space marine termies (with jump packs - possibly) in Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists (no smurfs for me) and Blood Angels colours, but without transfers at present. I have also completed version 1 of Rogue Trader/Inquisitor Kalen Dark in termie armour (heavy PA in FUBAR rules).

I already have 2 squads of de-blinged & painted imperial guard Cadians to add to his retinue. Of course this may well turn into an Inquistorial strike force, hm`mmmmm?

Cool idea, looking forward to seeing it!

For the rhino, have you seen Ramshackles Iron Grumbler? It looks like it could be serviceably made into a deblinged rhino...

Interesting concept. My take would be along these lines:

Standard SMs: Viridian Interdict Marines, no shields
Scouts: Junker Legionnaires (they already have shotguns, knives and pistols)
Terminators:Junker Exosuits
Dreadnoughts: The Grizzlies are a perfect choice
Rhinos/Variants: Gotta go with Old Crow vehicles

I thin of marines as "knights in space", so I made this unit as my assault marines:

The whole army can be seen here:

Very nice stuff, Curtis :-*

Was not sure about the direction my TrueScale project will go, but now I know.

Nice, very nice!

When I get some more time, I will post pics of what I have done already!

Problem with Space Marines is that I started playing Rogue Trader in 1987-88 and I much prefer the idea of Marines as they looked and were written about in the fluff then ;), than to the over-detailed nonsense they have devolved into now :'(

That's not really a problem if you choose to stick to the old background material. I have built a Space Marine force for 4th edition using Rogue Trader models and sticking to the RT background. You can see some pictures of them here (old topics, shameless plug):

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11432.0 (tactical and assault marines)
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11632.0 (scouts)
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11065.0 (field police)

You can do something similar with the other models you mentioned using just the Space Marine rules and not the warrior-monk background.

So is this TrueScale a 1:1 modelling project? Games using full sized replicas? Sounds interesting!

For an alternative Rhino, and base for vehicles I'd go with Curtis' new Iron Grumbler myself.

As a former Evil Empire follower I do have some interest in Space Marines though over the years changes to their style and rather bias background has made me care less about them. I agree that the newer trend of absolutly covering them in ornamentation doesn't really suit my vision of them.

Also I find myself constantly hating how there are some amazing realistically scaled pieces of artwork, like this for example (I know he is a bit of a newer style so starting to be covered in useless gubbins but the body proportions are more important, and a few extra pieces on a Veteran or Leader is okay by me):

Yet as a result of the EEs "heroic" scale the official miniatures have rediculous ape arms and other very weird body proportions.
 :?

I am constantly stunned when I find "Truescale" projects in my wanders round the net as very often they capture what I do like about the marines perfectly.

I've got a (unpainted-) platoon of metal marines scouts only, led by a witchhunter.

The old Warzone wolfbanes are the same size and proportions and use them as adversaries. And they're sculpted by Mark Copplestone.

If you don't believe in lead, you're already dead.
