Static Grasses - what's missing?
« on: September 25, 2010, 03:24:24 PM »
We’re currently knee-deep in about 104 different colours and lengths of static grasses as we’re in the process of doing the mixes for our own static grass range....

Other than the usual "spring, summer, autumn" (in all varieties of names by GW, GF9, Noch, Javis etc – which we’ve done already {GW Grass, Scorched, Glade, Burnt and Dead | GF9 Green and Arid | Javis Spring, Summer Autumn, Noch Spring and Summer} are there any grasses people would like?

We've already added:
“Steppe Grass” - which is a mix of 2mm and 4.5mm pale grasses to make a short pale-green with longer very pale grass mixed into it.
“Gamer Grass” – This is a much brighter green mix “Lurid Spring” for those who want to telegraph their grass; more “In your face”.

We’ve also added two mixes of “Martian Grass”, one mid-tone mix, then a darker version of the same.

Shorter static grass

We’ve made some short-static-grass mixes for 2mm- 15mm wargames figures/models also, particularly aimed at 2-12mm:

Spring
Summer
Winter
Martian (red grasses)
Dystopic Green (reds/browns/vivid green mix – sounds horrid, actually quite nice)

We’re aware that without seeing the mixes it’s a bit awkward, but if you can think of any colours or mixes to add, then please shout them out and we’ll look into it.

Can you do them in clumps like Noch and (better) Silflor? I've stopped using loose static these days.
So many projects..... so little time.......

I can for myself, yes: haven't mastered the industrialisation of it though - yet.

Long grass for the Africa would be very useful! Not being fully familiar with your stuff (to my shame  :(  ) I'm not sure if this already exists in amongst your range. Maybe Steppe Grass?

If not, I'm sure it would be a popular addition  :D

I agree, clumps would be very useful too.

You mean Elephant grass? Or tall savanna grasses?

I think I have seen a 'Swamp Mixture' somewhere, consisting of darker green and brown colours. Something like that would really be nice.

Ok, thanks. I might have to nick Captain Blood's technique then.

I do agree, tall static grass clumps, like 15mm - 20mm (so waist to chest high on a 28mm figure ) would be a seriously useful terrain product. I've tried using the various filament type stuff sold by Woodland Scenics and others as 'reeds' or 'long grass', and I find it just too fiddly to use. And it never looks quite right either.

I did acquire some allegedly 'XXL 12mm - 18mm tall' tufts from 'Greenline', but a/ they weren't anywhere near that tall, 12mm-18mm was a blatant lie b/ they were rubbish quality compared to Silflor, c/ they were even more ridiculously overpriced than grass tufts usually are  >:(

heh yeah.... i think i need a lottery win though - the equipment is kinda expensive and the company selling it isnt sure it will do the job either  ???

I do, however, ahve my ahnds on a superior flock-applicator than the Noch GrasMaster and which costs about 60% of the Noch. hopefully will ahve some in the next week or two.

Captain... i can get longer grasses, not sure on the longest lengths though... i've never seen anything over 6.5mm myself... but theres minimum orders of 150kg..and that is a heck of a LOT of static grass  lol

Vikotnik - I can do a dark green and brown mix, yes.  :)

Vikotniks suggestion is great.
And I'm also with the tall static grass :)

It would be great if there could be a jungle mix of dark green and some parts brown :)

Would you be able to sell it by the ounce, preferably in ziplock bags?  I'll have two of the Jamaican blue.
