Storage Question: airtight or not?
« on: October 03, 2010, 03:54:43 PM »
As my Victorian build project gets bigger I've been thinking of the best way to store the buildings. At the moment they are just in carboard boxes but I've been keeping an eye out of cheap plastic conatainers I'm intending to pad out with foam.

My local stanionery store is having a sale on some very nice plastic storage boxes and when sealed they are airtight and more to the point waterproof. I'm wondering if being in an airtight environment will affect the builds in any way or the foam I'm going to add come to think of it?

For anyone who hasn't seen my build threads the buildings are primarily foamboard onto which I have glued embossed plastic brickwork sheets. The glue I've used is Copydex which is a latex based rubber cement.

As long as they are not wet for some reason when you snap them into the air tight container I do not see a problem with them. Air tight will tend to keep odors from breaking down also, so that falls back to the completely dry before you seal them. I find a bit of a problem finding an adhesive friendly to container plastic and foam cushioning that sticks to both and does not disolve one or the other.

Just a few thoughts for your consideration.

They should be fine. To be safe though, see if you can get hold of some of those silicon packs that come with shoes and things as they're designed to grab any moisture that does get in.

I fear Captain Blood may be attempting to beguile you with his more than generous offer. Have a care. ;)

I've been using plastic crates for many years. They stack easily and the variety of shapes and style make it easy to categorise stuff. The only major caution I give you is when using any epoxy-based or fume-emitting stuff such as enamels, turpentine blah blah blah. If these are placed in a sealed box too early (before they are properly cured) the fumes can accumulate and rot your structures.

There is an easy solution. Leave the lid off or drill air holes into the box.
