Chapultepec cadets
« on: October 19, 2010, 07:47:36 PM »
I would like to find some miniatures that could represent the Mexican Cadets that fought at the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. Any ideas where I could find 28mm miniatures resembling this?

What kind of uniform is that??

It's kinda blurry but it looks he's wearing a little side cap! Possibly these ones will help:

Gorillo with tassle.

The bodies don't look as flamboyant as regular mexican army, though...

Doesn't look at all like the kind of thing that would be safe to use as historical reference - more a stylised 1930s type of statue.  :?

You can't really tell anything from that pic, anyway. Might not even be a hat. Might be Tintin. Might be a pigeon sat on his head.

 :D

You´re right. The resolution is not top notch. The gorillo looks good (it is not a pigeon  ;)). I will get some better photos.

Turns out it isn't Tintin or a pigeon, it is one of those hats:

Redoubt do a couple of VMI cadet sets in their ACW range. I wonder how similar the uniforms are? (no pics on the website) If close you could perhaps headswap some of those caps on to them, maybe?

"...Marines crest the ramparts at Chapultepec. Note the red stripe on the trousers of the Mexican cadet (about to die) in the left foreground..."

Does this help?

Gracias,

Glenn

Thanks for the interesting images. Here is a more detailed image of the statue:

Based on the picture posted by conquistador I'd say the ACW militia figures by Dixon Miniatures would fit the bill uniform wise.

Some more images of the Mexican cadets:

It seems the statue is wrong. It should be a frock coat rather than a coatee. So a ACW frock coated mini with an SCW gorillo should be the recipe  ;)

Now I am interested in which hat is the best one to use.  The statue implies the shako like hat is not how Mexican History remembers/idealizes the cadets.  Traveller's pictures seem to back that up for the hat while challenging the coat.

Gracias,

Glenn

It might be hard to see from the statue picture but he definately has a Gorillo type of cap. Found a picture from the anniversary of the battle:

the frock coat seems to be the correct option and I just found the perfect miniature...

The mini in the second row to the far left. I had some of those in my leadpile. With a headswap he is the man! (or in this case, the boy  ;))

Yes the cadets wore the grey frock coat and barracks cap; a rather plain uniform considering what some wore. 1st Corps has a pack of frock coated figures - some with caps I think.
