Rules Idea: Machine Pistol
« on: November 06, 2010, 12:27:02 AM »
Having asked several questions and stated some opinions, I thought it was about time that I came up with some ideas for the game. So without further ado...

Machine Pistol
Range: 8" , Rate: 3D , Damage: 1D+1 , Special: Strafe , BP: +2

I was thinking along the lines of the Mauser Machine Pistol first produced in 1896.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauser_C96

I've tried to balance it with the other ranged weapons available and have deliberately kept the range down so that it doesn't over shadow the .45 handgun.

What do people think ?

Interesting idea, and it's certainly a weapon type that would make sense to have as an option.  Overall, I think carrying a pair of .22s would prove much more effective, particularly at half the cost.  I'd almost prefer to see higher damage countered by a greater chance at jamming.  Perhaps a general rule for weapons something like:

Complex: The inner workings of this modern weapon are prone to failure when improperly maintained.  When a critical miss is rolled, the weapon will jam on a subsequent roll of 1 or 2.

That or give it a rate of D3 to reflect it's unpredictabilty.  That'll cause some chaos!  ;D

You would of course be firing at "A +1 penalty to Dexterity...", I would argue that to shoot at the same level of Dexterity, you would have to pay an additional 1BP (for either a point of Dex or Two-fisted), which then makes them the same points cost.

The Mauser C96 is simply a semi-automatic, like a Luger or an M1911. It isn't a machine gun.

The later M1932 Schnellfeuer variant is however fully auto. It didn't appear until the 1930s, though. When is Strange Aeons set?

Set in the 20s, but there is  plenty of scope to fit it in e.g. a prototype.

I'm not so sure about this, but that's only because Mr Sigma957 is my regular opponent and I don't want to be on the receiving end! lol

We'll have to give it a play test or three over the next fortnight to see what happens, but it looks OK to me.   Perhaps it could be a prototype (limiting the amount you can field?) as Jnr suggests, with Lidless Eye's 'Complex' rule..?

I agree with both statements, however Spanish gunmaker did also make "select fire" copies of the C96 in the late 1920s, so it could be argued we are both correct.  :D

The stats are meant to be generic, I just used the C96 as an example.  :)

I don't think we should get too hung up on history, otherwise cool equipment like the Tesla Rifle and Martian inspired Heat Ray would have to go out the window too.  :o

To me any weapon or piece of equipment from the the 1920s & 30s is suitable for SA.

Don't worry Dave, you can have one too  lol
