Alas. There is no translation into English ... I could give a lot of references to Soviet and Russian films on our topic - but they are without translation.

Found this...

Thanks for the link! I had seen some bits of it, but not the whole film.
Without subtitles I understand about 50% of what they say in Russian (I forgot most of what I learnt at school as 2nd foreign language) but it's almost enough to follow the plot. :)

Seems funny and interesting... :D Apparently I can understand / don't understand as much / as little % of what they say in Ukrainian than in Russian. lol

It is known that the differences between Russian and Ukrainian are insignificant, and Russian and Ukrainian (as well as Belarusians) understand each other without any difficulty)))

Chapaev (1934) movie

This film is based on the book about Vasili Ivanovich Chapaev (1887 - 1919) who was in real life the Commander of the 25th Division of the Red Army. Chapaev is an uneducated peasant and a decorated hero in the World War I and later in the Russian Civil War, that followed the Russian revolution. This man of action is fighting on the side of the poor people. His troops consist of peasants, just like him. Unable to write, he can brilliantly demonstrate various battle tactics by moving potatoes on the table. He is street smart. He never lost a battle against the experienced Generals of the Tzar's Army.

Oleko Dundich/ Aleksa Dundic (1958) movie

Life and times of Oleko Dundich (Aleksa Dundic), a volunteer in the Serb army during WW1, who later became a legend by fighting for the Red Army in the Russian Civil War.

Do not forget to include English subtitles)))

Thanks for these links! :o

I think I've seen this Chapaev movie once ...but very long ago! ...in the 1980's ...at a very late hour, on the French TV...

...in these years the French TV did show some Soviet films in "Ciné club" programs, late in the nigth - as if it were an old museum thing!

I suspect it was an excuse, they would not have been allowed to do it in the main TV programs in these days.

This is quite funny (or sad) when we talk about it now. Film making in the USSR was certainly under state control. But they made good movies. Which were not fairly broadcasted in the West, as they should have been.

Yes, indeed, in the USSR many good feature films were shot. They, of course, often had some Soviet propaganda, but this does not detract from their artistic merits.
In addition, «Chapayev» accurately reproduces real events. The book on which this film was made is written by Furmanov, who was a commissar in Chapaev's division.

And in these films there are magnificent battle scenes. The attack of the tachankas in the film «Alexa Dundich» is excellent. Although in the artistic (and historical) aspect, it is much lower than the movie «Chapayev».

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the October Revolution! )))

That's avant-gardism! Musical! 1922 ...
As musical instruments - real guns, machine guns, factory, locomotive and steamer hooters, tractors, airplanes ... These people really lived in a different dimension and thought in other categories!
Have patience - the introduction is not very impressive, in my opinion.

Let's hope that the TV-series will be after some time laid out in free access to the network (so often do the Russian producers of serials) and will receive English subtitles.

Cuprum,

Slightly off-topic but you're probably a good man to ask. Have they ever made a film/ TV series of Yuri Olesha's 'Envy'?

I remember reading it at university and I was absorbed by it. Seems it would have been an unlikely subject for a film treatment under the Soviet but maybe something has been produced since?
