foundry darkest africa and pirates question

(1/1)

summsi:
Hi,

I have some questions

1. do both ranges have the same size and can be used in one unit?

2. which DA figures can be used as slave soldiers (Congo or Sudan)?

3. could the tribal musketeers also be used as askaris?

Thank you!

Luthaaren Von Tegale:
Hi Summsi,
I've not got any of the pirates figures but they were all released around the same year or so as the DA figures - I'd say they are compatible.
I'd be tempted to use the tribal musketeers as the slave soldiers or as poorly equipped askari.

hope that helps

chicklewis:
The pirate figures are slightly taller and slightly bulkier than the Darkest Africa figures, but could be mixed in the same unit.  I have a full unit of 20 of the pirate "maroons" figures which I use for more europeanized (less tribal?) African militia in Darkest Africa type games.

Traveler Man:
I have the Foundry tribal musketeers and think they're very versatile. They can be used as firearm-equipped tribesmen; tribal levy for a Colonial power; very poorly equipped askaris; deserters from regular Colonial askari units; bandits; hired guards for a civilian commercial concern; guards for a hunting/exploring expedition; or as plain mercenaries.

Depends what you mean by askaris. Swahili wangwana (the "classic" Darkest Africa askari who acted as bodyguards to explorers and caravans) are almost always described and depicted as wearing a knee-length piece of cotton cloth around the waist rather than a "tribal" loin cloth. Sometimes even more items of Arab dress on top of that. Depends on time and place I suppose, though.
