WIP Making molds for a terraced house
« on: November 22, 2010, 12:12:44 AM »
My next casting project is to do pieces for a set of terraced houses.
The pieces shown here are to be used for the front and back.
I made four distinct pieces that I could mix and match to get different combination of door position and window arrangement.
The process shown below is for two of those walls.

Here's a picture of the blank brick textured sheet that I start with. Its made by Heki.

Pre cast doors and windows. The originals were made from styrene and plasticene clay.

After the basic size is made holes for doors and windows have been cut out.

The doors and windows in place.

The two wall pieces have been glued down to a sheet of masonite.
I use plexi-glass "L" brackets I had fabricated to make my mold boxes.
The mold box is glued to the masonite with a hot glue gun.
The the whole thing is sprayed with a mold release.

Here I've poured the silicon mold rubber into the box.
It takes about six hours to solidify depending on the room temperature.

A rather blurry picture of the finished mold.

First casting of the front pieces.

The back pieces.

Roofs, chimney's and side walls have already been done and cast. I hope to have a few assembled soon.

Thanks,

Mike

Great work I love the simple approach but are these terraced British houses?

The goal is to be able to use these cast pieces glued together in pairs to make the long sides of a terraced unit.

The end product should look something like this:

how much does this house weight?

i mean, it is really nice, but it hasn't really thin details, so why don't you use ceramic powder?

i cost 1/5 of the resin, and the effect is exactely the same!

and you can also "break" it, making holes or small ruins, to give a bit of variety to the scenery

for the pieces i sell i always use resin, because it is much safer for the shipping. but for me i tend to use ceramics, more customizable and more nice to paint!

The first casting in any mold I do is in plaster. This becomes the new master if I need to make more molds or alter a master for something different.
I like the resin for its durability.
I do most of my gaming at a local store's game room, at conventions or at friend's houses. My terrain has to travel more often than not.

i'm talking about ceramic powder, not plaster!

it is much more durable, i've some pieces and i use them like boxes for other stuff, and they are really indistructibe!

and if you put some black acrylic in the water for pouring, even if you scrtatch it with something sharpened it gives more weathering effect XD

Excellent work Skrapwelder, love the castings.  It's always nice to see how people set them up.

But I'm curious, Sangennaru where can you find some ceramic powder, I've never used it and it sounds interesting.

But I'm curious, Sangennaru where can you find some ceramic powder, I've never used it and it sounds interesting.

i bought it in a art shop, it is used (i guess) for art stuff like dolls or similar.

it looks exactely like the plaster, a bit whiter, but it is MUCH stronger:
for example, i use the plaster if i want to carve rocks, but using ceramics i have to sweat to make a single rock, and you cannot scratch it with your nails, you need a sharpen blade.

i've made some stuff in ceramic powder, and they are still here in perfect condiction. but you have to wait that it completely dries. once it dries, you can also wet it but it still remain quite hard.

i pay it 4 euros for 1 kilos, cheap but much more expensive than plaster (1 euro for 1 kilo, or 1,5 euros)

hope it will help!

Hello!

I know I'm 4 years late on this, but is there anyway I could see those pictures on other places maybe?

Loads of thanks!
