I meant converted. New barrels. Might sound like more trouble than it was worth, but somebody thought it was worth it, as they churned out something approaching half a million of the things.

We found one in the Armourers shop roof in 1988, took it down to the range - nasty sights and hideous recoil, not much fun at all, I would hate to fight a battle with one.

The original MH was notorious for its powerful and painful recoil, too.

Cheers Plynkes, you are an Oracle :)

Thanks, but Ha! That ain't true. I've just picked up a few bits and bobs along the way. There are quite a few folks here on the LAF who have much more knowledge than me.

Of course the thing that made the conversion project worthwhile in the eyes of higher-ups would have been that all British rifles would be using the same ammo thereafter. You can understand how desirable that would be. Obviously they had their reasons for opting for a big conversion program rather than just making more new rifles. Maybe it was still cheaper, even given that you had to replace about half the weapon. Cheap is always very popular with both governments and voters (until word starts getting in the papers about troops' shoddy equipment, anyway).  I don't really have enough knowledge to comment on the pros and cons of the idea.
