Sub/landing craft(pic heavy)
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:06:54 PM »
So I've managed to build one submarine so far. The only problem is unless I make a whole underwater board, I can't yet play any games with it :-[  So to be able to play some Gaslight games I'm planning to build a couple of landing craft to allow me to use my Nemo army I'm painting just now.

I had an idea I posted on another thread earlier I thought I might try...

This is as far as I've got just now, but even this early on I'm not happy with it! I didn't want it to take up the whole board but this diffinatly looks to wee for a start!

Someone came up with idea for a whale sub in the other thread. Would that be a better option for a landing Craft?

What if these were the tentacles of a giant squid sub?
Mariners running along the tentcle sections to get out of maybe a sort of banana splitting end section (splits into 4 parts at end)?
Just a thought but with your modelling skills I'm sure whatever you decide to do will look amazing

Neat idea.  And I like JB's suggestion for a killer whale.

BTW, I really like your concept sketches.  They're a really nice starting point.

You could do the conning tower as a separate piece.

That's a great idea Jim! The colour scheme alone would be cool! How would you make a landing ramp or door though out of the curved nose?

The squid idea bobble, I was thinking of making one ( a smallish one I might add) to fight the other sub I made in some sort of under water game. Although a squid model where half of it's submerged and you only see the top part of the body and the ends of the tentacles would be good for a boarding actions type game where you have it attacking a steamer or some sort of galleon! You could maybe five models to represent the squid, one for the body and four for the tentacles, which move independently of the body!

Inspired idea of Jim's with the killer whale and I love your concept sketch of it. :-*

Killer whale?

Don't do it! Its just Jim's way of creating an excuse to model the entire Japanese whaling fleet in 28mm (and he would probably complete the lot in about 2 weeks)  lol

Killer whale looks good.
How about the nose sliding back and up over the section behind it. Instead of opening like a mouth.
I would draw you a sketch but it would be put to shame against your drawings.
I agree the first idea is too small.

I think you should just do more awesome sketches so we can pinch the ideas  ;D

Whole head lifting up, like they do on some cargo planes, is another brilliant idea - get building

Yep, top half of the head opens upwards and is hinged at the neck?

Help!!

For some reason I'm really struggling with this one. I'm on my third attempt and I can't get the shape right! :-[. The first one was too small, the second one looked too much like a deformed shark and the third I'm not sure about. The door is only held on with blutack.

I'm afraid I tore up the second one it was that bad and I didn't take any pictures.

Any help welcome.....

I reckon you should slope the rear part of the central portion down a bit and for the opening hatch you could have it on some sort of piston system so the hatch stays in the same plane. I don't know if that makes sense and I'm trying to find a comparison.

cheers

I still think you should stick with the original LCM (Landing Craft, Mackerel ;)) concept.

The main problem with the Mk3 Prototype is, to my mind, that it does not look "fishy" - as with most vertebrae, it's usually the lower jaw that moves, and you should therefore have a "dropping ramp" based on that concept, as you did with the Mk1.

I've taken the liberty of doing a side elevation for two versions of your original concept:

As you see, the frontmost bulkhead is inclined in the direction of movement, to make it look sleeker and have the (more or less) flat front plate pose less resistance to the water, much like a pram-bowed boat often has.

The bottom variant also has a part of the "forehead" lift up to allow larger equipment to disembark - this feature would depend on how far you incline both the forehead and the jaw ramp.
