That episode of Torchwood was for me the best one (of a bad lot, admittedly). It was more scary because the evil was human, not Sci-Fi or supernatural.

It was even  more scary because it was set not far from here, and we do have people like that in these parts!

Yes you are right lets stop these stuff here now.

I am sure that the guys here diden´t want to piss annybody off so don´t take it to seriously

cheers Grimm

I'm not pissed off by what he said but as I pointed out I've never heard that song and I would imagine it would be considered pretty offensive these days in most parts of america probably as much because the reason it was written is long since forgotten and now such a song would just serve to open old wounds.

That's really the problem with the south in particular.  Every time things seem ok either some good ol boy or some yankee or some wanna be civil rights leader stirs things up again.

So! All hillbillies are crackers, not all crackers are hillbillies, and you let rednecks describe themselves as rednecks and don't offer to do it for them.

That's pretty much the truth of it for just about anyone anywhere.

Not exactly :

Quote from: "Wikipedia"
a song that seems to criticize both southern racism and the complacent bigotry of American northeasterners who stereotype all southerners as racist.

Matt

As I said I don't know that song so you can't exactly expect me to understand the context of it.

By the way I'm not offended by being called a Yankee so much as I think it's odd or funny for someone to call all Americans Yankees although I understand it's pretty common outside the U.S.  I still think it's odd though.  :)

I've always found the bigotry of "Lilly White" New England Yankees to be as funny and frustraiting as that of the hillbillies and readnecks in the south and midwest.  It's easy to have no race relation problems when you have little or no racial diversity.

Ironworker, it is very common outside the US for "Yankee" (mostly shortened to just "Yank" around here) to simply mean "American." It's a whole different context, and that's just what it means to us. We know that within the US it has a different meaning, but we still use it our way.

It's slang, but not necessarily pejorative (though it can be). It can be meant affectionately. I'd say it was neutral in that regard, and depends on the context.

Edit: By the way, just out of curiousity: What state is MO? Is it Missouri? I'm a little rusty on my State abbreviations.

You are correct Plynkes.

As to the whole Yankee/redneck/cracker/ad nauseum thing, I'm from New Jersey, and about the only thing all of the previous have in common is the thinking that the state they are from is better than New Jersey.

We're used to the cracks about it. When I lived in the South, no one believed I was from New Jersey because I didn't sound like The Sopranos.

Oh that's fine as long as all Britts don't mind being called English.  Everyone from Great Britian is English right?

Well that bit is true.  Just about every state other than Kansas is better than New Jersy.

Ha, the English tend to do that almost as much as the Americans, so they won't mind a bit.

Those pesky Celts (and some mongrel Anglo-Celts, which is what I am) tend to have conniptions about it, though!  :)

By the way, Americans use the term 'Yank' the same way we do sometimes. In the Great War when they sang The Yanks are Coming, The Yanks are Coming! they weren't referring to the Army of the Potomac!
