It’s a little nippy out there (or in the water)
« on: December 13, 2010, 04:45:39 PM »
With all this fishy business going on it has inspired me to build an idea I have had for a while for our Nemo VSF army.

Carved the basic shape out of pink foam

Used thick glossy paper to make the riveted armour

Making legs out of plastictube

Progress so far

What do you think?
Still not sure what to do for feet. Flat feet or pointed like a real crab?
Will build big pincers for the front and it will also mount some sort of gun.

For practicality I'd say flat feet as pointy ones would sink into the sea floor and/or sand on the beach. For coolness though it has pointed feet.

I'd ask how long it took you to bang that together, but it would depress me to no end, I am sure.

That's quite a piece of crab! lol

Seriously, that looks very, very good already. As for the feet, why not use little hemispheres? I got a pack of some 10-20 clear solid plastic hemispheres at a local crafts store (The Range, not Hobbycraft for a change, but I guess they should stock something similar), which have a diameter of ca. 15mm (you can also get smaller ones), Price was something like 1,49 for the pack, so good value for money.

Anyway, those can be easily placed flatside down in a variety of relative positions (as you can "rotate" the round tube around on the surface of the hemisphere), and if you add some rivets around the circumference, it should look suitably victorian.

To illustrate what I mean, here's a pic of a steam tripod I did a couple of years back:

Giant enemy crab! (that's an computer game joke, for ye old farts  lol)

For the feet you could go for the best of both, pointed feet with some sort of skirt on it to make sure it would not sink to far.

Great stuff :-* :-* Do it as a fiddler crab, one massive claw and and teeny one for delicate work.

Thanks guys for all the good comments.

Neil it is hardly a production just a small diversion from painting US infantry for nam :D

Jim
that was the idea I was thinking of as well.
Not too sure how to go about making the claw. All the ideas I can think of remind me of the evil empire Orks.

Looking brill even this early on!

What about using shield to cover the bottom part of the legs. I'm planning to use this guys technique to make some for my subs.

It might give it that more Victorian ornate feel.
The other thing I was thinking about was port holes on the front of the crab. What about bulging eye/portholes either side at the very front? Maybe rimmed in riveted steel framework. Kind of like the fronts of tie fighters in star wars.

Managed a wee sketch to show what I mean....

I left out the claws because they would have gotten in the way of what I was trying to show you.

Thats terrific, I woudl still go with the claws in place of guns or perhaps harpoons as well?
