Air War during Russian Civil War questions?
« on: December 30, 2010, 02:50:33 PM »
Looking for books and other information for this era. I know about these:'Gone to Russia to Fight, the RAF in South Russia' by John Smith.

'Over the Balkans and South Russia" by H.A. Jones.

'The Day We Almost Bombed Moscow' , whilst a generalist book on the intervention has chapters on the RAF in South Russia and Kondratev's "Aviation in the Civil War", translated by Tom Hillman? Any others?

Thanks,
Brian

"Aircraft of the Russain Civil War" by Vyacheslav Kondrat'ev Marat Khayrulin. Translation & Supplemental Notes by Tom Hillman. Has a number of stories contined within.
Frankly, it's the best book around in English. I'd the books you mentioned, but this book is just super. In addition, loads of colour plates and B&W plates on aircraft used.

Cheers,

Helen
Best wishes,

I have read:

"Flight of Eagles: a story of the American Kosciuszko Squadron in the Polish-Russian War 1919-1920" by Robert Karolevitz and Ross Fern

"The Diary of a P B O (poor bloody observer)" by Frank J Shrive (Archangel theatre)

"Gatchina Days" by Alexander Riaboff (flying for Reds, then Siberian Whites)

I recommend each of them for giving the flavour of their respective theatres.

I have tried many times to get the following, which is frequently recommended:

"Kosciuszko, We Are Here: American Pilots of the Kosciuszko Squadron in Defense of Poland, 1919-1921" by Janusz Cisek

Do not bother with:

"Last Train over Rostov Bridge" by Marian Aten

it is impossible to distinguish fiction from fact, and there is a lot of fiction.
