"Washing the Spears" Rules
« on: 06 January 2011, 03:46:55 PM »
Hi folks, thought that I would pimp my good friend and sparring partners latest colonial rule set for the Anglo-Zulu War, "Washing the Spears" based on Dave's well received previous offering for the Sudan Wars, "A Good Dusting".

OK of course I am biased, but they do give a tremendous "game", having being the Imperial player during the numerous play tests I can say that although currently undefeated the games were never a foregone conclusion and the result could have been a lot different on several occaisions.

I've never come across either of these rules sets before - but I like the idea of one side being auto-generated and then controlled by all players!

Sounds as if the aim is to create a co-operative wargame?

Does anybody know where there is a review/battle report that gives a flavor of how the rules play?

Phil,
Let me start trouble.  As a long time fan of The Sword and The Flame, what would make me want to by these rules?

Nowt wrong with TSaTF good solid rules, and if you like them there is no reason for you want to buy other rules, and its not up to me to persuade you otherwise.

Phil,
A fair and honest response.  Good luck to you and Dave in the enterprise.

Good, honest answer, Phil. People should make up there own mind what they want from a game. That's why I wrote these, as I don't like TS&TF experience, but that's only a personal choice.
I think we should move away from better/worse evaluations. Rules are different, people are different; so it follows some will like one set, some another, and some none of them...

Here's a quick write up I did after testing them last month http://web.me.com/abu_iskander/Reflective_Wargaming/Reflective_Wargaming/Entries/2010/12/18_Sudan_Test_Game_(Solo).html.

I really liked the auto-generation aspect for solo play. My units aren't quite as well finished as the other writer's though!

I will plan on getting the Zulu set as well.

I like both AGD and TSATF, but would use them to fight different scale battles.

This sounds very interesting. I really like the idea of a Mahdi force controlled by all players.

With obvious changes do you think the game system for 'A Good Dusting' may be transferable to the Indian Mutiny?
